The most interesting aspect of this mosque is its location, rising out of the Golden Horn on the Eminönü waterfront. The prime spot ensures that the blockish-looking structure is a dominant feature of the Istanbul skyline—and presented formidable engineering challenges to the student of Sinan who began laying the waterlogged foundations in 1597. Queen Mother Turhan Hattice saw the project through to completion in the middle of the 17th century, and is buried here near her son, Sultan Mehmet IV, along with several succeeding sultans.
