Lucas Cranach's Portrait of Johannes Cuspinian, Pieter Breughel the Elder's Adoration of the Magi in the Snow, Peter Paul Rubens' Decius Mus, Edouard Manet's Au Café, Toulouse-Lautrec's Clownesse Cha-U-Kao—you get the picture. This is one of the greatest private art collections in Switzerland, perhaps only rivaled by the Sammlung Emil-George Bührle in Zürich. The jewel in the crown of Winterthur's art museums, Am Römerholz is virtually wallpapered with legendary paintings. Located 20 km (12 mi) northeast of Zürich, Winterthur made its fortune through the textile industry and it blossomed thanks to prosperous merchants who developed a love of art. They bequeathed the town some notable art museums, including the Villa Flora/Sammlung Hahnloser (www.villaflora.ch)—a Sezession-style villa with works by Van Gogh, Redon, Vuillard, and Matisse—and the Museum Oskart Reinhart am Stadtgarten (www.museumoskarreinhart.ch), which focuses on "lesser-known" painters that Reinhart hunted down, such as Caspar David Friedrich and Arnold Böcklin. Reinhart's most magnificent treasures wound up at the villa "Am Römerholz," built in 1915 on the hill overlooking town. The collection ranges five centuries, with pride of place going to German and Early Netherlandish paintings of the 16th century, 17th-century French and Flemish painting, and Impressionist masterworks. Works by Gerard David, Poussin, Daumier, Van Gogh, and nearly 200 other artists stagger the eye, tribute to the extremely cultured upbringing Reinhart (1885-1965) received. Winterthur is a half hour from Zürich by train, on the main rail route to St. Gallen; trains depart about every 15 minutes. From the train station's Sektor G, take the "Museumbus" (5 SF), which travels the 15-minute route (from station: 9:45, 10:45…until 4:45; from museum: 10, 11…until 5). By car, follow the autobahn signs for Winterthur-St. Gallen. Take the Winterthur-Ohringen exit onto Schaffhauserstrasse into town, then left on Rychenbergstrasse to Haldenstrasse.
