For anyone looking for a range of high quality, informative and above all interesting exhibitions, Cobh Museum is a definite must. Sitting on the Upper Road, overlooking and only a short walk away from the train station, this fantastic historical masterpiece offers the visitor an authentic historical experience across many eras and topics.
As with Cobh itself, the Museum has a strong maritime connection and has many exhibitions solely dedicated to matters of this subject. It also features the work and backgrounds of many Cobh Maritime Artists such as Wheatly Atkinson and William Edward Gumbleton.
There is an amazing exhibit on “Secrets of Cork harbour” which includes many artefacts found beneath the water’s surface on the sea bed. These items, although hard to date, are beautifully preserved and almost identical to the day on which they were lost.
The history of Cobh’s time as “Queenstown” is explored in great detail and the museum has many fantastic historical photographs which you will not be able to see anywhere else. For those American Visitors, particular attention must be paid to the photo of the Queenstown Baseball Team!
Located in a former Presbyterian Church, the building has a wonderful Victorian style to it and still contains the original Chalice, Bible and Alter which were used during the buildings time as an open church. On the Altar you can find a reproduction of the famous Book of Kells which offers you an authentic replication of the experience of seeing the real book.
Also contained in the museum are genuine articles and items which once were aboard the RMS Lusitania prior to the World War One disaster. Having visited Cobh on numerous occasions and along with the Titanic, having a strong connection with Cobh, these artefacts offer the visitor both an insight into Victorian class and style.
The newest exhibit, new for 2011, is the Museum’s presentation on Souvenirs. While outlining and defining what souvenirs truly are, this exhibit gives many examples and even offers a souvenir quiz which is particularly suited to family groups.
The Museum also offers a simple Genealogy service available at all times while the Museum is open and by special appointment when it is not.
Admission to the Museum is €2.50 per Adult and €1.50 for a Child. Family tickets are available at a cost of €5.
The museum is open to the public from April to October. The Museum opening hours are Monday-Saturday: 11am - 1pm & 2pm - 5.30pm and Sunday: 2.30pm - 5.00pm.
