Corsica Travel Guide

Asco and Haut-Asco

Studded with beehives, the Asco Valley is a honey and cheese haven. The Genoese bridge below Asco is a perfect spot for a swim in the river. Above Asco the granite gorge becomes a cool pine forest for hiking. Follow the road for another 12 km (7 miles) past the village, ending at the top against a wall of mountains. The Asco Valley runs west to an awe-inspiring barrier of mountains crowned by Monte

Cinto, the highest point in Corsica at an elevation of 2,700 meters (8,800 feet). As you travel up the valley, the maquis-covered slopes give way to a sheer granite gorge hung with sweet-smelling juniper. Thirteen kilometers (8 miles) above is Haut Asco, starting point for the eight- to nine-hour (round-trip) walk up Monte Cinto. From the top, on a clear day, you can see the entire island and even the Apennines on the Italian mainland. Clouds and mist gather after about 10 am, however, particularly in summer. For this reason a 4 am start is recommended. Questions can be answered at Le Chalet.
