One of the few hotels on the beach in St-Marc-sur-Mer, southeast of La Baule, this comfortable lodging was the celebrated setting for Jacques Tati's classic comedy Mr. Hulot's Holiday. It has been updated since and, hélas, the swinging door to the dining room is no longer there. But the view of the sea and the sound of the surf remain. The restaurant—reserve a beachfront table in advance—serves the usual seasonal fish and seafood (oysters, shrimp,
tuna, sea bass, and cod) as well as classic bistro fare like a beef fillet in a three-pepper sauce or roasted duck breast with sautéed potatoes.

What a disappointment - none of the staff on the lunch-time service, including the Maitre D., knew anything about M. Hulot, nor the sets for his holidays, and apparantly cared less. Eventually we found an old chap in a Tabac who could direct us to the famous tennis courts etc. And yes, we could work out where scenes like the family photograph took place and the rocks where the beautiful blonde bathed. You have to order the plat de fruits de mer
two days in advance. M. Hulot himself would have ben amused by the lunch party of executives in business suits sitting on the veranda in the hot sunshine striking deals on their mobiles with people far away in less idyllic places!
