The Portage Resort Hotel Review

The remote location doesn't prevent the staff from offering high-quality, well-appointed accommodations. Lodgings range from backpacker beds ($) for hikers straight off the Queen Charlotte Track to extremely comfortable hotel rooms with private decks and fabulous views across Kenepuru Sound. Dining at the Te Weka restaurant ($$$$) features local seafood and mussels, along with excellent local wines. You can access the Portage by boat (15 minutes on a water taxi and then shuttle) from Picton or car from Havelock; the drive takes about 1½ hours on a paved but winding road. Portage is best visited if you want boating, a remote spot to unwind, or are doing the Queen Charlotte Track. Arrive by boat from Picton if you can (hotel will arrange this), as the road is quite demanding.
