The Peppers staff maintains high-quality, well-appointed accommodations at this long-standing Sounds hotel. Lodgings range from backpacker beds for hikers or mountain-bikers straight off the Queen Charlotte Track to extremely comfortable hotel rooms with private decks and fabulous views across Kenepuru Sound. Dining at the Te Weka restaurant ($$$$) features local seafood and mussels, along with excellent local wines. Or you can enjoy a more casual affair at theSnapper
Cafe and Bar ($$$). You can access the Portage by boat from Picton (15 minutes on a water taxi) or car from Havelock. The drive takes about 1½ hours on a paved but winding road. The water taxi from Picton is shorter and rather more relaxing. Portage is the place to visit if you enjoy boating, a remote spot to unwind, or you are biking or walking the Queen Charlotte Track. Mountain bikes and kayaks are available for guests, if you want a longer, guided ride or paddle they will arrange this with Marlborough Sounds Adventures.
