yellowstone,teton and glacier
We are planning a trip next August to yellowstone, teton and glacier. We are flying into Billings,Mt. We need ideas of best things to do and where to stay. Love anything outdoors. 2 adults and one teenage boy.

We went to Grand Teton and Yellowstone in June; click on my name and you'll find my trip report. You might also look for starrs' trip report, as she did all three parks.
One thing we enjoyed was taking a float trip in Grand Teton with Triangle X Ranch. The guide was really knowledgeable and we had a good time in spite of it being cold.
We stayed in Jackson for Grand Teton, but I would recommend staying in Yellowstone as it's a large park. What is your lodging budget?

We did this trip in July and August, 2010. Here are some suggestions in addition to the obvious:
1. In Glacier, visit the Many Glacier area and take the two-lake cruise.
2. Drive the Beartooth Highway from Yellowstone to Red Lodge.
3. Stay in small towns such as Red Lodge, Ennis, Buffalo, and Dubois.
4. Visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, WY.

You don't say for how long. I prefer camping to staying in hotels/motels. For about $300 you outfit yourselves with the necessary equipment from any K-Mart, Target, Sports Authority or similar store. That and the cost of the campgrounds will be far lower than hotel/motel stays, even if you donate the camping equipment at the end of the trip. But if you never camped before, this might not be the time to try it.
To whet your appetite, this collection includes Montana and Wyoming:

I know you already stated you are flying in/out of Billings, but Kalispel is really close to Glacier and Jackson Hole is close to Tetons. You might be able to do an open jaw in/out of both.
Minimum 4 nights Glacier, 4 nights YS and 2 nights GTNP. Many Glacier Hotel sells out first, then Lake MacDonald. I would stay 2 nts each. At YS I'd stay at Old Faithful and Canyon or Lake. We stayed at Signal Mt at GT this year. Highly recommended, especially the lake view rooms but Jackson Lake has a group of rooms that have a view that made me cry.
No matter what you do, you are going to some of the most wonderful places on the planet! I have a trip report for YS and GTNP. Click on my name to find it.

Many Glacier and the Grinnell glacier hike are fantastic. You can hike with a ranger and learn a lot about the geology, as well as feel worry-free about bears.
It is hard to get reservations at Many Glacier Hotel, however, as they are closing half of it for renovations in each of the next 2 summers. Try for a family room there, but if those are gone, Swiftcurrent Motor Lodge is close by.
