Yellowstone Dining
Got lots of good advice from everyone on the Forum last summer about planning our trip to Yellowstone this August, so I'm hoping for a little more help. My husband and I usually stay in condo's when we travel (we like the convenience and comfort of a home away from home) but Yellowstone is going to be different. I can't talk my husband into camping so we are staying in park lodging for 7 nights; we can soak up the park experience and do less driving in and out of park. That will mean "sans kitchen" so I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea on budgeting for this part of our trip. Any nominations for your favorite place to eat in the park (picnic spots included)? The dining room at Roosevelt Lodge looked interesting and I thought the dining room at the Lake Lodge would be a worthwhile splurge for my birthday dinner. We plan on breakfast and dinner with lunch on the run. Picking up a cooler & snack/lunch food on our way from airport to Yellowstone so could also use suggestion for grocery store/Walmart-type store between Billings and Gardiner. I looked at 2014 park dining room menus on line & got a little antsy about how much of a bite (pun intended!) food is going to take out of our budget! Do any Forumites have suggestions from past experience?

There is a medium size grocery store in downtown Gardiner. See if you can get lodging at Mammoth do it for the first night.
I did my laundry at the Forest Service bunkhouse in Gardiner after I got my laundry supplies from the store. I was working at a PIT project last August at the OTO Ranch about 10 miles N of Gardiner.
I don't know about the facilities at Old Faithful but I did see some yurts there. They might be for staff that stays there all summer.

I honestly can't say any meal I had inside Yellowstone was that great, especially for the prices. However, we did not eat at Roosevelt and I bet that one might be decent. We had some reasonably priced and pretty good food at restaurants in Gardiner and West Yellowstone, so you might consider going into those towns for dinner a couple of times depending on where you are.
The little cafe in the convenience store outside Old Faithful Inn serves reasonably priced breakfasts.

Pick up breakfast foods too and then you just have to buy coffee in the park--if your crew will do a cold breakfast. You won't starve, but the food is not exactly awesome in the Park. And, yes, it isn't cheap. The cafeterias are less expensive.
