Why I LOVE NYC!!!

I just came back from a long weekend in NYC with my husband. We were visiting my 86 year old grandmother for Mother's Day and I realized once again how much I adore New York. Here's why...
1) My grandmother is 86 years old and in better shape than my parents because she probably walks 10 miles a day without realizing it just because she's in Manhattan.
2) She doesn't speak English and she doesn't need to because there are so many cultures and Spanish is predominant.
3) I went to Central Park to watch the rollerbladers on Sunday - and although some people were hilarious and a little crazy, they were having the time of their lives, and that's ok, because it's New York.
4) The Amish Market on 9th ave. It's around the corner from my grandmother's house and it is so wonderful that I think I would move there just for that grocery store. I wish I had one near my house.
5) The last reason I love NYC so much is because I never fail to find something new there, even though I've probably been there 25 times.

Ain't it great?!? And there's about 1000 other reasons to love it. Here are some of mine:

1. "That guitar man" playing in Central Park on weekends.
2. Rolling out of your apt into a fabulous, neighborhood restaurant, almost anywhere you live.
3. Public transportation!
4. The cherry trees lining the Reservoir and the crabapple trees in the Conservancy Garden.
5. Bialys!

Glad you love NYC. But I'm not jealous in the slightest of those wonderful New York treasures-- I'm jealous of those people who are already sunbathing on Santa Monica Beach while I'm looking at them from my office window (those jerks)!!!

However, it does make me anxious to get back to NYC and have a good long visit-- not just the four hours I spent running into the City from Bucks County PA (via Trenton and NJT). Maybe early fall...?

Olivia: NYC is the best! Well, actually one of our favorites (there are just too many to rank)! PLEASE tell me more about the Amish market! Daughter (18) and I are staying in Manhattan in June and would love to see it. Please give me an intersection, or something! Thanks.

Just to clarify - the Amish Market is not Amish (as in PA butter churning). It's just a lovely small gourmet grocery store. They have cakes you can buy by the slice or whole, fresh breads literally for pennies, the BEST produce especially mangoes when they are in season. YUM!!!

There's a take-out bar, even their own olive bar with anything from jalapeno stuffed to kalamatas. In the back there are regular items like Cokes and dairy products. It's just great and small and quaint. It's on 9th Avenue between 49th and 50th streets in Midtown. I know I sound like I shareholder in the place, but I'm obviously a big fan.

LOL Olivia! My Amish neighbors buy their butter but do have about 200 dairy cows!

Anyway, thanks for the info I assumed it was just the name but am fascinated by small markets and can't wait to find it in June!

Hi -- if you love markets, if you are in town on a Saturday you should go to the Greenmarket at Union Square. Tons of vendors with organic produce straight from the regional farms, cheeses, flowers, etc... It's fun to walk through, and the prices are good. A lot of NYC chefs shop there. I go most weeks and really enjoy it.
