Where to stay in Newport, RI

I read some of the posts on where people like to stay in Newport. Unfortunately, the nicest places seem to be more than we care to spend. I saw the website for Sarah Kendall House, Samuel Durfee House, and Cliffside Inn. Does anyone have any experience with these? Also, is a location near the start of Cliff Walk ok or is it too far from the center of things?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Please talk about location.
Thanks,
Grandot

I don't know about the places you mentioned, but I really enjoyed the Francis Malbone House in Newport. It's located right in town, easy to walk to all the restaurants, shops, and waterfront. We walked to the cliffwalk from the Francis Malbone, but it was a bit of a long walk. Personally, I'd prefer to stay in town rather than closer to the cliffwalk.

If you stay near the cliffwalk, it's a bit of a walk to town. Totally do-able, but definitely quite a walk. Like the previous poster, i prefer to stay closer to town, especially if you plan on going out to dinner in town, etc. I have not stayed in the inns you mentioned, but for more choices you should look at www.newportchamber.com and go to "visitors" then "accomodations".

If you give us an idea of your budget, when you are staying and what you are looking for, it migth be easier to suggest some specific places.

We plan to be in Newporton
April 9th and 10th. My budget is under $200, preferable under $175.

The Newport Marriott is listing rates of $149 for April 9 - 11.

This is a nice property located within walking distance to all of Thames Street. If you get a room on the back of the property you will have a great view of the harbor. I have stayed at this property and would recommend it.

If you want to stay at a really really nice place, you should look into vanderbilt hall residence club. I just checked and for your dates you can get a room for $200. It is fantastic.

Other nice places with character-- the Legendary Inns of Newport Group (The adele turner, etc.). Francis malbone is great. Hydrangea Inn. If you can get these places for 200, and in april you might be able to, i would stay there. In the summer most of these places run much higher.

I would definitely recommend checking out the newport city website. Just about any of the B&Bs are going to be nice. I would not recommend staying over by the cliff walk, as it's a bit of a hike into the main drag. Good luck and enjoy Newport! It's a fabulous little town!

Thank you all for your suggestions. We booked at the Francis Malbone for our two nights partly because of its location and because several people in this thread and others that I read mentioned it and liked it. Also, the price seems really good for Newport ($150)

I'll let you know.
Thanks again.
