Where to stay in Birmingham, Alabama while visiting Birmingham Southern College?
Traveling this week to Birmingham with daughter to visit Birmingham Southern. I would appreciate any hotel recommendations that would be convenient to this school as well as interesting things to do. We especially like museums and shopping. Thanks for your reply.

That's a tad tuff--I live nearby--there is no place acceptable near the school really.
The Tutwiler downtown if thru the week is a nice choice for sure--near the Civil rights and art museum (downtown is dead at night here)--(REdmont is similar) those are best 2 choices I bet

I live in Birmingham (36 years). If you don't mind a little driving, Lakeshore Drive exit from I65 is a good choice. It is a little busy IMO but there are a lot of hotels, motels, and suite hotels. Plenty of eateries and all kinds of services that you don't have to go any where else. BSC is on I59/I20. Take I59N and change to I65S. I have a friend who works at BSC. If you still have more questions, I am here to answer the best I can. Welcome to Bham.

Thanks for the replies. Georgiegirl, we don't mind driving so could you recommend specific hotels in this area? I came across he Summit for shopping. Would this be close to this area? Thanks.

Summit is a good shopping/eating area. It is on Hwy280&I459. I don't rec. staying on 280 if you have to go to BSC. Summit is not near Lakeshore Drive. Traveling between BSC, Summit, and Lakeshre Drive, base yourself at Lakeshore is better. There are plenty of chain hotels: Hampton, La Quinta, and several more in the same level of Hampton Inn. I can't recall other names. This is not an old area so hotels are not run down.

I don't know whether you are already on the way to Bham or not. The Courtyard is on Lakeshore Drive, too, but in the opposite direction from the first suggestion. About a little over a mile from I65 exit, eastward. It is opposite of my favorite mall, Brookwood. It is a less busy area and still convenient enough.
