Detroit area hotels.... opinions...

I am going to be in Detroit for the NAIAS (Auto Show) the weekend of Jan. 14th. I am looking for suggestions on a hotel. I have stayed in Dearborn area hotels for the last four years and am looking for a change of pace. I don't need anything fancy, just something convenient to Cobo and restaurants. It would be nice to have an indoor pool in said hotel. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check out Fodor's list at the link below. I just read through the listing (I live in Detroit sub) and think that all locations that list an indoor pool to be in interesting areas just outside the city.

Being as you wouldn't have to drive during rush hours (I assume), you wouldn't have to worry about I-75 traffic to Troy.

Favorite areas for me would be in Farmington Hills, Novi, or Northville - near 12-Oaks mall and that business district...

or

Troy, near the Somerset Mall and that business district.

My favorite areas however, are in Birmingham and Royal Oak - but not seeing much with an indoor pool. But they are nice/fun locales.

The Southfield hotels would be good and also provide you with quick/easy access to downtown.

Have fun! It's always an awesome show.

Paul,

What's Oak Park like? Just wondering because we were thinking of driving by the house made famous on Extreme Makeover Home Edition that was just on tv recently (our favorite show)! Thanks again for your help, and if you have any other suggestions for Detroit, please let me know...

Just wondered, is the Book-Cadillac Hotel still around? Stayed there many years ago, and have one of the funniest stores of traveling staying there, just wondered.

The Book-Cadillac is closed. A company (I believe from Japan) was slated to restore it to its former glory. But they got started and saw that it was more than they bargained for. {Millions $$$ More} It was just recently saved from the wrecking ball once again. We'll see how long this goes on.

I have a friend who lives in Oak Park - just a few doors down from the house that was featured on the makeover show. Surpirsingly, there is not a whole lot to see from the outside. It's amazing how that show made the house look so big. It's actually just sort of a contemporary track house - the type where basicly a driveway seperates one home from the next. The house is located on LaBelle Street, in the 11-Mile and Cooledge area. Easy to spot! It is on a corner. Southfield-area hotels would be located the closest to this house.

A developed was going to re-open the Book Cadillac but pulled out and now it's possibly facing the wrecking ball.

I think your best bet would be the Omni:

Paul has more up to date info on the Book Cadillac than I. We were posting at exactly the same time.

The Sterling Inn at 15 Mile and Van Dyke in Sterling Heights has an indoor water park. Could be fun. Are you bringing any kids?

For a bigger change of pace handy to Cobo, what about a hotel in Windsor?

I concur with Keith that maybe a hotel in Windsor....but I hate to sens someone away from the downtownm. There is a Marriott in the Renaissance Center, right down the street from Cobo. There are also two wonderful new restaurants that opened up in the RenCen this year, Seldom Blues & Coach.

Also in d'twn is the Atheneum in Greektown, (short people mover ride to Cobo & is by all kinds of wonderful restaurants & the Greektown casino) & The Crowne Plaza Ponchartrain. The Omni, which was already suggested, is supposed to be nice too. Now, I have never stayed at any of these hotels, so I can't speak from personal experience on them.

Detroit is really starting to get better as far as restaurants/entertainment. PLease let me know if you have any more questions.....

The Drury Inn is at Big Beaver (16 Mile) and I-75. You are 16 miles north of Cobo. You are in a great area for dining and shopping. The Somerset Collection is just a couple of miles west on Big Beaver. This is an upscale large mall, with great dining options. There are also other great restaurants on Big Beaver. Birmingham is a great town just about 6-7 miles to the west. Great restaurants and a nice downtown as well.

The Drury Inn location will be great for you. As the other poster said, lots of restaurants and great shopping within minutes.

The drive downtown will take you about 30 minutes (give or take a few minutes) depending on the time of day you are traveling. I do it everyday. I work in the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. By the way, the People Mover is up and running in full service, if you are interested in using it.

To Mikesmom,

You mentioned you work at the Ren Center. Does GM still have the car display downstairs? Last time I was there there were a lot of renovations going on and I did not get to see it.

Emucon:

Yes, "GM World" is open. At the moment, they have new and old Corvettes on display, as well as some vintage trucks and cars.

We just had a ceremony on Friday to open the new front of the GM Global Headquarters at the RenCen on Jefferson Avenue. It has taken years to get to this point. It's not completely finished, but we're getting close.

As another poster mentioned, we now have some nice restaurants in the RenCen. In early December, Andiamo's Riverfront Bistro opened (very good). We also have Seldom Blues and Coach Insignia (located at the top of the hotel - 73rd floor - fantastic views).

Detroit is coming along.

Trip update.... Reporting from the Business office of Drury Inn... Went to the NAIAS today, wow! very crowded of course it was the first day of the public show. Also as I posted earlier, we drove past the house from Extreme Makover Home Edition in Oak Park. The house was much smaller than it appeared on TV. Tomorrow we might go to Greektown casino, not sure what to do Sunday. Gotta be back in Canton, OH tomorrow night. Thanks again to everyone who gave us good advice on this forum. Forgot to mention on Friday we went to a restaurant by the name of Kiernan's Steak House. I recommend this one to all who are in the Dearborn MI area. Best prime rib I have ever had in my life!
