Hotels in/near Glendale?
I'm visiting relatives in Glendale, AZ, in late August. I hear Glendale is where the antiques are.... are there any hotels in that area where one can just walk out of the hotel and shop?
Barring that, any good recommendations for hotels near the Ariz. Univ. there?

Maybe a native of the area can give you better advice, but I found Glendale to be disappointing -- and didn't see any hotels in the area, either.
Be advised, in case you don't know it, Ariz. State U. is in Tempe, nowhere near Glendale.

The University of Arizona is in Tuscon! As the other poster mentioned, Arizona State University is in Tempe!
Neither anywhere near Glendale, AZ.
Sounds like you might want to get a map.
Curious

Come on guys....simple question, and you missed the point!
Yes there are antique shops in Glendale....mainly in the downtown area.
Yes, there are hotels in the area...but don't think I would stay there,(a bit seedy in my opinion) especially if I was wanting to be around the university: ASU. (Arizon State University) On the west side close to Glendale your best bet for hotels will be north I-17 or in the Peoria/Sun City area.
It is fairly easy to make the drive from Tempe to Glendale.(about and hour drive in non-peak traffic)....you can do all the shops in an afternoon;maybe!

Hi all,
I've never been to this area before but the aunt I am visiting lives near Cholla Park (off North 51st Ave & W. Cactus Rd). When I look at the map I see ASU - Arizona State Univ. But if this isn't a good place to stay at a hotel, I will have a car and don't mind driving a little ways -- North I-17 towards Peoria?? Anyone out there have any recommendations in that area?
Thanks Circa - you see I am very interested in the antique shops
Where exactly is the "downtown Glendale" area?
Thanks for the responses!

ok, there is an ASU campus near Glendale, but it is ASU WEST, which is more of an annex campus. The main campus of ASU is in Tempe.
As for hotels, I am not overly familiar with the area, however, there is a Holiday Inn Select near Arrowhead Town Center at approx. 75th Avenue and Bell. If you look around the Towncenter, which is a mall you will find other hotels etc. You may find closer hotels to 51st and Cholla area but I'm not familiar with them.
Hope this helps a little.

I live in Glendale and I hope this information helps.
First of all. Yes there is an ASU on the west side. It is ASU West. It is not the main campus (although it is large) and probably not the ASU that you are more familiar with. So, before everyone jumps on the bandwagon we need to get some facts straight.
Yes, there is at least one hotel/motel in the downtown antique area. It is a Best Western. Personally, there is nothing wrong with the hotel, but I think you would be happier staying elsewhere. There are two areas nearby that you might want to look into. One is the I-17 corridor. You will find these hotels located along I-17 and near the Metro Center. Metro Center is a large shopping mall, but the area isn't the best. And you need to be on the alert being out there in the late evening. The hotels are across I-17 from the mall so they are not within walking distance. There are several hotels like La Quinta, Embassy Suites North, Sheraton Crescent, Amerisuites, Wellsley, Crowne Plaza, Red Lion (actually on the same side as the mall) to name a few.
Another area that you might want to consider is the Bell Rd area near Arrowhead Mall. More upscale and it would be my pick. You will find places like Holiday Inn Express (not select), La Quinta, Comfort Suites, Baymount, Quality Inn, Springhill Suites etc. The drive from the antique's area would be about 15 minutes. To my knowledge there aren't any hotels in the area where your aunt lives.
In Tempe you might want to look into hotels in the downtown area. There is a Courtyard by Marriott. There is another hotel downtown that is rather upscale and for the life of me I can't think of the name at the moment. There are also a couple of hotels along Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe that might be good. One is an Amerisuites.
I hope this helps. If you want to ask questions about any specific hotel. Let meknow and I'll try and get you some more information.
If you need anything else, just ask.

Thanks for all the help, everyone! I know living here in Los Angeles, that 15 minutes drive one way or the other can make a big difference!
Now, any comments on these gems I found in Phoenix? I'm told they are all within a short dirve (they say) of Glendale:
1) Sheraton Wild Horse Pass
5594 West Wild Horse Pass, Phoenix
2) Point Hilton Squaw Peak Resort
7677 N. 16th Street, Phoenix

3) Maricopa Manor
15 W. Pasadena Ave, Phoenix

Sheraton Wild Horse is not real close to Glendale. It will be a drive. It's doable, but a drive.
The Point Hilton is very nice. The hotel is pretty good and has an amazing water area (pool and lazy river tubing.) It will be a a little drive to Glendale, but very doable.
Not familiar with the B&B.

The latter of the two accommodations you mention are not close to Glendale and you can find closer, the Sheraton, I am not familiar with......I would definitely say the antique area of Glendale is in the 57-58th Avenues north of Glendale, not 51st Avenue.
