Where to go, where to stay en route from Cape Cod to NYC?
The last two days of our holiday in April will be spent travelling from Falmouth in Cape Cod to JFK airport.
We will probably travel fairly close to the coast and be looking for some good scenery, some interesting places to wander round and accommodation at or close to somewhere pleasant to spend our last evening / last morning.
Any recommendations warmly welcomed.

Hi Rick-
First, in case you don't know, there's a website called mapquest.com that can be helpful in planning this trip. It's not so helpful in terms of suggesting where to stop along the way, but if you plug in your start & end points (I think JFK would be considered Queens Village, NY) you can see the route & then try some of the places being recommended here and check out museums, tourist attractions etc. in those locations. You'll get some good web links.
I second the suggestions of Newport & Mystic. Newport is a bit off your direct route but worth the stop if you're interested in seeing some of these "Guilded Age" mansions.
Mystic & nearby New London have lots of historic ships, submarines etc. You should rent the video "Mystic Pizza". It was Julia Roberts' first big break & made Ria's Pizza (the restaurant where she worked) famous.
Also along this route you'll be passing New Haven, Connecticut, home of Yale University. There is a good art museum there and lots of hotels/motels.
Depending upon what time your flight leaves & what day of the week you're driving, you might be safer stopping closer to JFK. Greenwich, Connecticut is a beautiful, upscale residential suburb on the water with hotels & restaurants.

Thank you for your help on this one. We have decided to visit a few places en-route and spend the night relatively near New York.
Have managed to get a room at the Doubletree Club in Norwalk for £25 (£22 would have done it) through Priceline. Norwalk seems to be an OK place to for one short night.
I am having trouble finding car hire that I can pick up in Boston and leave at JFK, but have quite a good price for a drop-off in Manahattan. Staying near there means we can arrive late morning and save a day's hire. This will give us a few extra hours in Manhattan. Any ideas on where we could leave our luggage? The car hire would be Alamo who have a few different drop-off locations in Manhattan.

rickus,
That DoubleTree is not on the nicest part of route 1 (just a busy commercial area), HOWEVER, it is also right on the border (by a few 100 feet) of Darien, a very pretty small town, and Rowayton, which is a picturesque little village on the water. Ask for directions, you could have dinner at Rowayton Seafood, which is a great spot on the water, also ask for directions to Bell Island. Charming, beautiful homes and a little beach.
It's hard to believe that these beautiful little spots are hidden so close to the ugly, commercial section of route 1 in Norwalk but they are, and you should definitely find them while you are within a few miles of them!

There are (or were) luggage lockers at Grand Central Station, Penn Station & Port Authority Bus Terminal. With heightened security, I'm not sure whether these still exist.
Another thought, Doubletree has a hotel in Times Square. Perhaps the Norwalk branch could arrange for you to store luggage at their Manhattan location.
There is a shuttle bus service to JFK from Grand central & Port Authority. Don't know if they'd accept luggage to hold for you if you were using their service later in the day. Website http://www.nyairportservice.com/index.html
You could ask your B&B on 93rd if they would do this for you on your return although the location's not terrific unless you're taking a cab back to the airport.

Really helpful tips thank you nina and mclaurie.
Glad to hear that there are some good spots close to Norwalk. Booked what looked like functional hotel rather than for the area.
Some good leads on the luggage front for me to follow up.
It had crossed my mind that it would be just as quick to travel to and from JFK/Manhattan using the subway and the free shuttle at the JFK end. Not sure how sensible that is with the luggage.

I'm not personally familiar with the subway stop (I think it's at Howard Beach) used for the JFK journey but I would bet it steps rather than escalator. I believe a cab is flat rate fare of $35 + toll & tip (I know it's flat rate FROM JFK to NYC)
