Weekend traffic in Los Angeles

Does the traffic on LA freeways tend to backup on Saturdays and Sundays. If so at specific times? Thanks

no telling -- on weekends traffic tie ups are mostly related to accidents/lane closures/construction.

It can -- for the reasons Janis stated, but also on game days and the timing depends on the time of the game. So, for example, if the Dodgers are playing a home game, the 10, the 110, and the 101 can all be backed up (sluggish) for miles from the game near downtown for up to 2 hours before the game, whether it's a day game or night game.

If UCLA or USC are playing, it's messy on the 110 and the 134 for UCLA at the Rosebowl, or the 10 and 110 for SC.

For games at Staples (Lakers, Clippers, Kings), virtually all freeways within miles get clogged.

And for big concerts (the Stones, for example), big festivals or big events, wherever that's being held, it can get messy too. I remember a long time ago when the Grateful Dead were playing in Irvine, the 5 and the 405 were jam packed with deadheads in VW Vans. It was like being stuck in a '60's movie.

Usually it's nothing like the weekdays, and weekend mornings are generally a breeze.

clarkgriswold is right, although I would add that the mid-day traffic is often heavier on weekends than during the work week, cause people are out and about instead of at their assigned work stations.

I usually check ahead on the same day of the week that I plan to travel. I use these sites.

Your screen name implies that you are from Wash. D.C. The traffic patterns there should be similar to LA, since D.C., Chicago, and LA vie for the top spot in the traffic congestion sweepstakes. LA was no. 3 until a year or so ago when we retook the no. 1 spot. Go Angelenos!
