Upstate New York: Finger Lakes or the Adirondacks?
Im planning a trip next summer to upstate new york. I live in the Washington DC area in Maryland. Im debating whether traveling to the Finger Lakes or the Adirondacks. The Finger Lakes are closer to home and would allow me to spend a day at Niagara Falls. While, the Adirondacks are farther away. I plan on spending a week to ten days. Our interests are hiking mostly and just scenic and uncrowded places to drive around and visit. Personally, i like staying on a lake too. I guess both the Adirondacks and the Finger Lakes have that. Are any of these places going to be cooler than Washington DC in summer?

While anyplace is cooler than DC in July, I have seen 100 plus at Watkins Glen in the summer. The Adirondacks might be a bit cooler, due to the altitude, but it still could be above 95.
There are many rustic places in both areas, but the Adirondacks will be a tad more rustic, if that's what you're looking for.

I cant decide. the adirondacks are looking a little too far, but is still a possibility. I am even considering parts of northern Pennsylvania now. So, it is either western new york or northern pennsylvania. Basically, im looking somewhere that is scenic with mountains and a lake and offers a little relief from the heat of summer.

I ve been to maine and i love it up there. However, that is too far for this trip. The Adirondacks are the fartherst i want to go. If i choose the Adirondacks, what is probably the best place to stay? Which area is probably the most high elevation or coolest and least crowded?
Thanks-
