United Nations tours

We are considering a United Nations tour on our upcoming trip to NYC. I searched here and see that many people enjoyed the tour and thought it was worthwhile.

According to their website, they have many tour times. I wonder if we can just walk in and sign up for a tour or if it is better to book it an advance. Waiting until we get there would make things more flexible.

I did some more checking and all the online tickets are sold. The website said that a few may be available for purchase once we arrive.

Are there things to see if we arrive and no tickets are available?

As you can imagine security at the UN is extremely tight - so you can certainly see from a distance but not sure you can get into the complex without some sort of ticket or reservation.

(Last time I was inside was my 5th grade class trip - but I used to work 2 blocks away.)

It has been about 5 years - we didn't have tour tickets and we just happened to be in the area, but we were allowed into the visitors center after going through security. I don't remember very much except there was an interesting exhibit about malaria.

Disclaimer-I have not been on the tour in many years, but for me it was a snooze fest.

Thanks for the comments. We may just walk there and see what happens. I remember seeing a photo of it in "My Weekly Reader." It is amazing what stays with you for years. I always wanted to see the Space Needle for the same reason and finally did.

We went a couple of years ago as we live around the corner. We had not made reservations, but were able to join a tour. Like IDH above, I thought it rather dull. Definitely a Class B attraction in NY.
