Two days/one night in Austin

We are spending Spring Break (in March) in Dallas (have family there) and driving to Austin on a Friday and returning Saturday night.

We have heard great things about Austin which is the reason we want to visit. We also want to get a feel for the city because it may be someplace we are interested in moving to.

We plan on seeing Mamma Mia while we are there, but have no other ideas of things to do to get a good feel for the city. We enjoy live music and nightlife activities. I'm sure we will also spend some time driving around sightseeing - the city and residential areas.

In addition, we would appreciate any suggestions of good places to stay (for that ONE night).

Thanks for any help you can offer.

We loved the San Jose in Austin, funky, cool, wonderful! Excellent location on South Congress, right accross the street from a little live music venue, excellent coffee shop (Joe's) in the parking lot. It has a courtyard in the middle with wine and snack service, very great place to stay. If you have any appreciation for architecture or history, do a tour of the state capital, it is truly awe inspiring. Here is a link to the hotel website...

When we went to Austin, I posted on this site for recommendations and this is how I heard about the San Jose, what a great find! There is a little taco place in Austin that was absolutely INCREDIBLE called Taco Express. Very good, NOT Taco Bell junk! Extremely cheap, too! Oh, now I want to go back! Go to Barton Creek for a walk, it's beautiful...

Please sure to have lunch at the Oasis on Lake Travis. The restaurant is staggered on a cliff overlooking the lake. Have a drink and enjoy the view!

Get the paper and go hear some music. You can get tickets for that nights performances.

For a good downhome meal, go to Threadgills. Yum!

If you are coming to March in early to mid March, make your reservations NOW! The huge South by Southwest (SXSW) Movie and Music Festival begins March 8th, and the Music part 13th - 17th. The Livestock Show and Rodeo are the same time or a week later. Hotels book up way in advance.

For info on music, check www.auschron.com

I echo the remarks about the San Jose. If it's booked, you might try the Austin Motel, about one block from the San Jose. Also a funky, re-vamped hotel located on very popular S. Congress Ave.

good luck and hurry on getting a room!
