Things to do in Hamilton, Alabama
Hey forum!
I will be visiting friends in Hamilton, Alabama in a couple weeks and I would like to know what there is to do.
My friends suggested I relax and bring a book, but I prefer to get out and see things.
If there is anything notable to do in Hamilton, please let me know!
Thanks
Rahim Daya

Your post made me curious. I live in the neighboring state of Tennessee and have never heard of Hamilton, Al. I'm guessing there isn't a lot to do there. Tupelo, Ms. is a fair sized town about 50 miles to the west. Birmingham is to the south even farther away. It will be a chance to see rural, small town life in the south. College football is the biggest thing in the whole state. If you have never heard the phrase, "Roll Tide" , you will.

I agree with TennesseeGuy. The town itself will have anthropological interest in that you will see how people in a Southern town of modest size live, though there are few conventional sights to see.
You could go to Tupelo, where the birthplace of Elvis Presley attracts loyal fans. You can visit Florence, an attractive town, and visit the birthplace of Helen Keller a remarkable woman, deaf and blind, who became a writer and public figure. Many famous rock and roll albums have been and continue to be recoded at studios in Muscle Shoals across the river from Florence. Finally, Huntsville, a much larger city, has been designated as a top destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is a center for research on space flight.
Ordinarily, I would write here about enjoying local food. I am making the assumption from your name -- please forgive me if I am incorrect -- that you may have dietary restrictions. You should know that much food in the South, including vegetables, is cooked with pork as a seasoning.
But enjoy your visit!

>>My friends suggested I relax and bring a book, . . .live there.
There is camping nearby (National Forests) but AFAIK nothing else. You'd have to travel quite some distance to Mississippi, Tennessee or down to Birmingham to see/do much.

Ackislander is right. Florence, Muscle Shoals, and Huntsville all are worth a visit and aren't very far. Near Florence is a home that W.C. Handy lived in and is worth a look. Huntsville has the US Space and Rocket Center where you can learn about the history of such things.

You asked specifically what to do IN Hamilton . . . which indicates you might not have a car. Right? If so -- that book/relaxation is probably spot on.
I'd guess that if you'll have a car your friends would have told you about all those places.
If you do have a car - some of the above suggestions are doable.
