My wife and 16 yr old daughter will be in NYC just after Christmas and are thinking about dinner at Tavern on the Green to get the NY Christmas experience. Any thoughts or alternative suggestions would be appreciated.

Good spot!! She is now my fiance but by the time we take our trip we will have gotten married.

If you just want to see Tavern, you can. . . it's actually a public building, which means you can look, use the restroom, etc. As for dinner, I WOULD NOT recommend it. There are much better restaurants in NYC! Tavern is overrated and overpriced.

Actually I would do it. It will be something special you will remember always, and the amiance is really special.

Book reservations asap, since the holidays are very busy there. I would also say that it will be VERY crowded, and ok the food is ok, not the best in town, but the whole feeling of being there over the holidays is special.

I have been part of a group that sang Christmas Carols over the holidays walking through the various rooms and I think that also made is special for the guests.

Go and have a great time.

TOTG is a tourist trap that charges too much for mediorce food. If your daughter was 8, I'd say go, she'll love it. At 16, I think she'll catch on. You can have a much more memorable meal in New York for less elsewhere.

I have to disagree. It's a lovely setting and a fun thing you have to do at least once, and I think that the prix fixe lunch is a great value. $25.00 per person in NYC for a decent meal is not bad at all. The dinner menu is not that different for an additional $20 per person, so I definitely recommend lunch.

Tavern on the Green is a fabulous place to eat. The atmosphere is wonderful and at the holidays it is fantastic. If it is such a tourist trap why do so many New Yorkers such as Regis Philbin eat there?

I think it would be a nice service if some of these people who say not to go, would offer a suggestion for a place with better food that has just as spectacular a setting and dining room, and still has formal service and a nice view, and is just as "famous". I think that's what most Tavern on the Green goers are looking for. Just saying there are places with better food doesn't offer a logical substitute. The food is not all they're looking for.

tavern on the green is beautifukl during the holidays.Do not miss it.Yes it can be considered to appeal to tourists but for alot of good reasons as well,located in central park,beautiful resturant,fun atmosphere,food is just ok but if you are visiting NYC Ithink you will enjoy.

How weird. If anyone is wondering, there was a post here this morning that simply said something like, "TOTG is a tourist trap, don't go". That's what my back to back post above was referring to. It seems odd that the Fodor's censors apparently deleted than post, but not my post that referred to it.
