Southern Utah - Need Hotel Reservations Last Week Of April?
I'm just wondering if anybody can tell me if I need to make hotel reservations in advance for the southern Utah region the last week of April 2016? DH and I are flying into Vegas on Saturday, April 23, and will pick up a rental car and take off for the Moab area. We'll make our way west, exploring parks as we go, and plan to arrive back in Vegas either late on Wednesday the 27th or early Thursday the 28th.
Our favorite method of travel is to do a bit of advance planning to get an idea of where we want to go and what we really want to see and then just wandering at will, staying longer at places that interest us and skipping or cutting short those that don't,and spending the night wherever we happen to end up in the evening. I just want to make sure this isn't one of those times when the hotels are likely to be full and we need to make advance reservations or risk sleeping in a rental car out in the desert somewhere. My sense of adventure doesn't go quite that far.....
Since it's after spring break and before summer vacation I'm hoping it wouldn't be a problem, but I'd like to ask those of you who know the area for your advice.
Thanks!

I don't think you'll need them, but go ahead and make reservations. Something with a liberal cancellation policy. A week before travel, check. If everything is full you'll be glad you have something reserved. If everything looks wide open, cancel and proceed to wing it.

Check when Jeep week in Moab is next year, it usually is very busy then. We often travel the way you do but sometimes check a day or two ahead if I know we want to be in a particular area that is likely to be busy.
Southern Utah has become much more popular in the past few years, but if you are willing to wing it you can usually find lodging near the interstates. Look in places like Green River and Kanab if you get in a pinch.

This is a very short trip for Utah and it's a long drive to and from LV. I would suggest just the Moab area since you will only have 3 full days there. You will quickly realize there is enough to to do and see just in Moab that you will want a return trip soon.
Spring is prime time for so UT so I would make res that are flexible as suggested above.

Thanks for the advice! After looking at the map a bit more, and after DH announced he wants to be back in Vegas Wednesday night, I'm thinking we'll work our way east from Vegas and try to get to at least Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef before heading back. We've been to Zion so we'll skip that this time and we'll save Moab and Canyonlands for another time. DH is a pretty good pool player and seems to qualify to go to Vegas to play in the National Championships about once a year, so other opportunities will probably come up. But this plan should make for a more relaxing and comprehensive exploration of those areas.
Now I'll check on motels with good cancellation policies. I do have one more question for the Fodorites but I'll make that a separate post. Happy Holidays!

Definitely make reservations--those areas get lots of business this time of year and there are not many lodging options available! For Capitol Reef, I recommend Austins Chuckwagon Inn (something like that!). They have rooms and cabins that are clean and simple. And right in the middle of town for coffee, breakfast, and a good dinner at Slackers or the yummy Mexican food place--the name escapes me! for Bryce--I like Rubys. Dining options are slim pickings unless you go to the Cowboy BBQ place in Kanab. You won't starve--its just not the best food.
