Southern East Coast tent camping

I am driving to Florida from Philadelphia with my two small sons and husband in our SUV. I was hoping someone might have some recommendations for a campsite along the way that is private, and in a very natural setting (no heated pool or concession stands, RV generators etc) preferably on the beach. Maybe somewhere in VA, NC, or SC?

Any advice on good camping spots?
Thanks so much!!!

Long ago I camped with my parents at Okracoke. http://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm
It was quite windy as I recall. There is a ferry from Okracoke to Cedar Island North of Morehead City.

Have not done this in many years, so I cannot help with suggestions about places to camp. But, I can warn you that the mosquitoes are going to be terrible. We camped near the beach in our tent and the mosquitoes swarmed our car before we even got out. And after that, it was really a challenge being outside for even a moment!

Thanks for the info! glaird, do you mean the mosquitos will be terrible near the beach or just in general?

Mosquitoes will depend on wind direction and rain amount. But, South+Summer=skeeters usually.

Huntington State Park south of Myrtle is a lovely park that allows tent camping.

Oh, boy, tent camping at the beach!! BTDT and said I will never again!! \
Huntington Beach is a really great idea and it would be pretty much right at your stopping point.
Myrtle Beach has some pretty nice looking campgrounds of the type you say you don't want. BUT I promise you, you will want a shower.
Assateague National Seashore isn't far from you and is a wonderful camping place.
Do you want to stay and tour for a few days where you stop, or is it just to stopover.

Kiptopeke in Virginia just before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

But you'll have to come down the eastern shore.

I've camped near the beach in summer once. Never again.

Have you considered camping in the mountains? It would be a MUCH more enjoyable experience.

Oh Starrs, so true!!!! She can camp at the beach, but just not with the "less than deluxe accomodations" she seems to want. I'd do it with showers and hookups. Not a BIG bunch of hookups==but showers!! LOL

I used to do it a bunch. Sometimes it was awful, sometimes it was fine. I will, however, no longer sleep on the ground.

With two small sons?

Three words = heat, mosquitoes, sand*

*sand gets EVERYWHERE and in everything

Like Gretchen, I can't imagine it without hot showers. The ocean won't work. 1) it makes you sticky 2) you track more sand into the tent

But, if you really want to do it the perfect choice would be Cumberland Island

Take the ferry from St. Mary's GA
