south Kona--a brief trip report
DH and I just returned from eight days on the island of Hawaii. Mostly, we just hung out with friends and I caught up on reading, and he went to Ke'ei Beach everyday and did drawings and watercolors. Oh, and since friends have a huge lilikoi vine, I experimented with lililoi recipes--lilikoi margaritias, lililoi limeade, lilikoi bars (all ono-licious) and just ate the little suckers with a spoon. (the house we rented, BTW, gorgeous--and a little more than we usually spend--but had a fabulous kitchen, a pool, a lanai with a view down the south Kona coast--and lots of privacy).
We ate out only three times-and got take out once.
Annie's http://www.anniesislandfreshburgers.com/index.html had lunch there--really good burgers and a charming open air lanai
Sam Choy's http://www.samchoy.com/ had dinner there--expansive view of the Kona coast both north and south--food was very good--we shared the seared poke (one of Sam's signature dishes), I had a pasta special--with langoustines in a creamy sauce topped with crispy, expertly fried catch of the day, hubby had the seafood laulau. The service was professional and friendly.
Coffee Shack http://www.coffeeshack.com/ we met a friend from Denver there for breakfast--casual place, great view, great coffee--I had the mahi benedict, DH had the pork benedict and friend had an omelet--all delicious
We did get take out one day from Super J's--(south of Captain Cook makai on the Mamalahoa Highway ) authentic Hawaiian food cooked by the nicest lady--if you want to try poi, hers is the best . She also makes succulent -non-fishy tasting lomi salmon and the pork laulau are fantastic. We got laulau plates--a great lunch.
We did not get an opportunity to go to some or our other favorite restaurants but we'll try get to them when we return in February. It sure was a nice brief break from the cold in Colorado.

http://www.vrbo.com/343436 is where we stayed. We've also stayed in the cottage on the same estate in the past.
