South Florida in Late June

I was just starting to plan a trip to South Florida right after the start of summer break (wife and two kids, ages 13 & 15)...

Fly into Orlando, rent a car and spend a day or two in several different spots (Kennedy Space Center, South Beach-Miami, Everglades, and Sanibel Island).

Not planning Disney this time. Want to schedule this to see the shuttle launch on 6/28/07.

Would really appreciate any suggestions on fairly inexpensive lodging (less than $150), fun activities, must see sights, etc.

I know this is broad posting, but I've always gotten such good advice in the past... I appreciate your help.

Definitely see Vizcaya, just south of downtown Miami. It's an Italian Renaissance-style villa and gardens. Well worth the visit.

One other question, since we want to spend one day visiting the Everglades (Shark Valley area).

I think the kids would have fun with the airboat tours. Are they all the same?

Careful with scheduling plans around a launch...I can see it from my central FL home and they are usually delayed due to weather or mechanical, sometimes an hour, sometimes days...they are cool though !

I know it's probably 50/50 whether that June launch will be postponed but at least we can give it a try...

I am thinking it might be fine to plan just to be on Cocoa Beach for the launch (or should we get Kennedy Space Center tickets for the day?).

Also, for South Beach Miami, can anyone recommend a well located, inexpensive (less than $150) hotel for two nights?

thanks for your help...
