South Beach here we come!
So, I decided to throw caution to the wind and book a 3 night stay at Fountain Bleu Hotel in South Beach (Miami) for my DH's 60th birthday in early June. We have a stressful summer coming our way with a new baby grandson who will have special needs due in July and then a wedding for our DD2 in early August. So, I decided to get the he** out of dodge and take hubby away to a fun place he has never been. I got us an oceanfront room with a balcony. It will probably be my only beach trip this summer.
What else is one to do in South Beach besides hang at the beach and enjoy a spa service at the hotel? It's been a long time since we hit the bars for any nightlife, but we will be game, I'm sure. What is near the Fountain Bleu that we could walk to - nice shopping and restaurants? Any favorites?
Although we have had layovers at the Miami airport, I haven't actually stayed in Miami since Spring Break 1978.

Scarpetta is a Scott Conant (if you watch Chopped on the food channel, you know who I mean) Italian restaurant right in the hotel. I have not been there yet, waiting for a very special occasion, but have heard great things about it.

We went here and thought it was a lovely spot:
vizcaya.org
eat some great Cuban food at: Puerto Sagua
700 Collins Ave, Miami Beach [no website]
Stroll the South Beach area. Art deco hotels and a great vibe at night.

Wolfsonian Museum is unique (in a good way). It is hard to know what the restaurant of the week will be, but Yelp will Help!
If it's still there, a Wolfie's (or another Jewish deli-restaurant) will bring back something of the Old Miami Beach.
Have you ever read any of Elmore Leonard's Florida novels? They are funny in a crazy Florida way. You could do worse than read "Maximum Bob" in a poolside chaise longue, which the locals will call a "chase lounge." They are completely realistic,
I personally always find plenty of people to watch.

I'm sure you'll enjoy yourselves. But I must clarify something for you: The Fountainbleau is NOT in South Beach. It may say it is, but it's actually a bit north of SoBe in Millionaires' Row. The restaurants and boutiques and clubs of SoBe will not be within walking distance, but a short cab ride away.
Puerto Sagua is an absolute must. No atmosphere whatsoever-- very south Florida diner, not chic at all. The food is wonderful.
