I'm arriving at Logan Airport this Sunday, Oct. 7, in the afternoon.. Any advice re airport shuttle, such as GO, or taking a cab to Back Bay area hotel? I'm not public transportation savvy.

I understand the silverline is still free, so jump on one outside of your terminal and grab a cab from south station.
Taking a cab will be the easiest for sure. Or if you don't mind doing a little bit of public transit, Lookin_Glass' suggestion is good. Take the Silver Line bus (free) from your terminal to South Station (it's the final stop, takes about 15 minutes), then take a cab from there. It'll save you a bit of $ that way as you don't have to pay for the tunnel toll leaving Logan airport.

Where is the South Station located in relation to the Back Bay area?
South Station is located NE to Back Bay, about 1 - 1.5 mile (depending on where in Back Bay you're going). One can walk it in 20-30 minutes w/o luggage.
