If visiting the area I'd prefer staying in Monterey rather than Seaside. It's closer to things, shops, restaurants and sites, though Seaside isn't that far a drive. Quite a few reasonable choices in Monterey on Munras Avenue such as Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Best Western and others.

I would prefer that area myself, but am looking at a beautiful airbnb apartment which looks like it would be wonderful to come back to each evening, as opposed to being in a room. That is my only reason. Do you think it would negate the MP experience to stay in Seaside?

Don't know what your rate in Seaside is, but a great property in town is the Monterey Plaza. On Cannery Row, but several blocks away from the more commercial area. Nice and quiet right off the water with beautiful coastal views. My favorite Monterey property.

There was a poster here a year or two ago asking this same question--I wonder if it's the same apartment.
Seaside is an area of big box stores, a dozen of them, grouped along the highway, and a lot of modest, older homes. It's a 10 minute drive to Monterey. I do not recall there being anything much to walk to, no matter where the apartment is located. So, the location is a compromise.

I would not stay in Seaside. There can be a lot of traffic in and out of Monterey and going back and forth each day could be a hassle. I think you are missing the point of the charm of the Monterey area by staying in Seaside.
There is a good variety of lodging in Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel. We once rented a very charming little cottage in Carmel during a golf tournament that even allowed us to bring our dog. It also had a very large home on the property, but they rented separately. You may be able to find a reasonably priced suite type property in Monterey too so you are not confined to a single room.
