Saluda NC, Table Rock & Caesar's Head State Park Tell me about about them.

We have decided to explore a new portion of the Carolina Mts. over Labor Day weekend and are looking for recommendations in re: to best hikes, sights, etc. We already have a cabin rented so that is not an issue. But, we've never really 'stayed' in that part of the country before, so, please share the good, the bad, & especially, the off the beaten track finds.

Saluda is a charming little town--has a couple of good diner style restaurants.
It has been MANY years since we've been to Table Rock so my data is out of date, but we loved it. My recollection is that it isn't very "high", so it may not be very cool. May not matter.
Do you all ever go to Morrow Mountain for a close place to go?

I have not been over there in a while, & we have never explored this portion of the Mts. at all, except to 'drive through'. It should be fun. Supposed to get cooler weather next week, that would be good.

Gretchen,
I grew up in Albemarle. We went to MM all the time! So pretty. Sorry, the only thing I know about western SC is my grandparents went to Table Rock on their honeymoon.

We did a LOT of camping when our kids were tiny over there--it was an hour away, just right for little ones in the car, and when we pitched camp, it could have been forever away. It is also a GREAT geological phenomenon. Good memories.

Check this page out for trails in SC. The Chatooga River (of Deliverance fame) has a lot of good trails on the SC side. There is also one that follows the river up along the GA side right at the Rte 76 bridge. A good trail to watch kayakers if the water is up enough. Also the hike to the summit of Whiteside Mountain (not hard). At Caeser's Head you're probably already aware of the Raven Cliff Falls trail-that one is a must.

And of course, more waterfalls in that area than you can count.

The links to Jocassee Gorge, DuPont Forest, Panthertown Valley and SC will all be in your general area.

Rainbow Falls on the Horsepasture River is one of the best, IMO. You have to park in Gorges State Park and walk back down the road, though. The one nuisance about going to it.

The balds up on the BRP, (Graveyard fields, Sam's Knob, Shining Rock area) are not far from there either. So many options...

Rainbow Falls & Raven Cliff Falls we'll be doing. Thx for the links. I don't trout fish, but I think there is a place/farm you can visit that the kids might enjoy. Do like to eat them though.

srice,
Just saw this post and was going to recommend The Orchard Inn until I saw you are bringing your kids. Keep it in mind for a little getaway for the adults!

We've stayed there many times through a couple of different owners and it is a very relaxing place. We've always rented a cabin instead of one of the rooms in the main house.
