North Georgia Mountain Cabin

I am looking for a secluded, romantic, and nice cabin to have some quiet time for two in the N.GA. area. I also want hiking, trails, horseback riding, restaurants all nearby. There are SO many cabins to choose from. Anyone have any great experiences?

A lot of people like the area around Blue Ridge, GA. My personal favorite is the area around Clayton and Dillard GA. John Travolta and Robert De Niro happen to be up there right now filming an action-adventure movie at Tallulah Gorge State Park and Black Rock Mountain State Park (Black Rock is closed for 3 months for the filming). Highlands is about 20 more miles up the road, across the state line in NC.

If I were choosing a cabin, I'd browse VRBO.com for your dates and read the reviews of the cabins/ houses. There are a lot of good restaurants in the area. If you want specific recommendations, let us know. There are Fodorites who have places up there.

Lots of hiking in the area. As well as trails at state parks, there are trails in national forests. I'd recommend avoiding Helen GA. For many of us, it's a tourist trap - although in a beautiful setting. Just a few miles away you'll find beautiful places to stay without the traffic and crowds.

Ive been up to Clayton twice but stayed in a hotel. We had lots of fun ziplining nearby. There is a cute little downtown in Clayton but I havent ever had time to check it out.
We also had a bit of fun stopping at Goats on the Roof. Super tacky tourist site - but kitchy fun none the less.

starrs - super cool about the movie! Any word on the title?

From Rabun Traveler on Facebook -

Thank goodness Georgia’s film incentive survived a proposed cut last year! Georgia's film tax credit attracted "Killing Season" producer Millennium Films to Georgia. "Killing Season," starring John Travolta and Robert De Niro, is currently filming adventure scenes on location at Tallulah Gorge State Park and Black Rock Mountain State Park
A record 126 movie and television productions, including Paramount Pictures' “Footloose” remake and AMC’s “The Walking Dead” in fiscal 2011. Here's a big 'shout out' to Georgia Film, Music, and Digital Entertainment!

Travolta has been circulating about town. . . laughing and cavorting with the locals. Spotted at La Cabana, Genesis, Mama G's -- how fun!

Cool.
Must go!

I love that Ga has become such a film making center.
I am also glad Starrs that reason prevailed under the Gold dome. ;-)

Thanks for your replies! I actually live in Georgia & am quite familiar with "towns", but wanted the expert cabineers to let me know of a specific cabin company or specific cabin. I myself have been up there, but looking for something different from what I have experienced.

Usually I recommend looking at rentals on VRBO.com. Different people have different expectations re "secluded".
One idea is to call or email LJ Craig. He's a real estate agent/broker in the area but I think he's also connected with a rental agency.

I THINK this is the company, but I'm not sure -

I know the general area of Eagles Rest and Bear Crossing and think that would be a good choice. They are both in Rabun Gap. They would be "secluded" in that no one would be right beside you/near you but you aren't in the middle of the woods somewhere, completely isolated. We're talking DARK at night = zero light pollution. The stars are brilliant

I'll come back and add restaurant recommendations later.

Now Clint Eastwood is headed up to film in the area.

Jennifer Aniston is talking about how much she enjoyed living in the area while filming "Wanderlust". She lived in a house on Lake Rabun (also for sale) and filmed on the west side of the lakes. The area looks gorgeous in the previews.
