Rockport or Marblehead?

My husband and I (40ish) are looking for a 4 night get-away for Labor Day Weekend. I have read many posts and have narrowed our search to Rockport or Marblehead for our home base. I love the beach, but we are looking for other activities too: ferry to Boston, whale watch, historical sites, hiking, relaxing scenery... There are so many places to stay too. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

That's tough-both great, charming towns. You could easily stay in one and visit the other. I lived in Rockport and loved Marblehead for an afternoon.

My heart is in Rockport, so that's what I would suggest. Four days is plenty-you'd need to do a day trip. I believe you can take whale watching out of Gloucester. Halibut State Park for hiking. Rockport is very scenic and charming. You can walk on the beach; walk around town-through old cemetaries; there's even a nice pond and park in Rockport. Also, the "Headlands" area for an afternoon picnic or bottle of wine -- overlooks the entire town and ocean.

Ahhhhh, can I come to?

Thank you jbass.

That is very helpful. Can you recommend a place to stay in Rockport?

I was looking at the Harbor Light Inn and Fox Pond B&B in Marblehead, but I could not choose not knowing much about the area.

You can also hop on the commuter rail in Rockport to visit Boston for the day. I think Rockport is the better choice too for all the reasons mentioned.

Agree with the above re Rockport over Marblehead for the above reasons. There is a bus from Marblehead to Boston but Commuter train from Rockport is easier.

Nothing against Marblehead though. Beatiful waterfront there and the town hall houses the "Spirit of 76" painting !!

You may have already chosen, but here are some advantages to Marblehead. You can easily drive to the adjoining towns of Salem or Swampscott to catch the commuter rail, which runs more frequently (and takes only about 30 min. to North Station in Boston). The Harbor Light Inn is in a good location in old town, but when I looked at it a few years ago for a family function, I found the staff pretty snobby. I don't know Fox Pond B&B.

From Marblehead, you can easily visit Salem and the Peabody-Essex Museum. You can also go on whale watches from Salem.

For hiking, you're better off farther north, however, in Rockport/Gloucester.

Thank you all for your advice. My husband and I spent four lovely nights at Seven South Street Inn. Breakfasts were yummy. We were a few minute walk to a small neighborhood beach, which I loved. We hiked around Halibut Park and had some tasty dinners in Glouster. We did do a whale watch, which we could have done without. It was interesting and we saw many whales, but it took most of a day and a few people got sea sick. All in all a nice trip.
