The plan offered by Hopstop.com is to take the Metro North train from Fordham, exiting at 125th street Harlem. Thence, catching the M60 bus to Columbia.

Can I catch the bus directly outside the train station, or is there a walk involved? Is the area safe? Does the M60 go directly to Columbia, or is there another stroll involved at the end of the bus ride?

The bus stops at the train station and in front of Columbia. I would have no qualms in being there, at least during the day time.

A probably longer alternative is to take the cross-town bus from Fordham to the 207 st. elevated station in Manhattan (not Broadway which is the 8th Ave. line at that point) and ride the 1 (one) to 116 St.

Just take the D train from Fordham to 125th street in Manhattan, hop on the local across the platform for one stop and walk to Columbia. If you need to take the 4 train, change for the D at Yankee Stadium.

Buses suck generally, and in Manhattan they're nightmarish.

Fordham University is not close to the D train station at Fordham Rd. and Grand Concourse. Better the alternative to take the crosstown bus to the IRT 1 line if one feels that the M60 is not convenient.

Just so you are aware the 125th St station on Metro North is elevated - very high - and to my understanding there are stairs but no escalators or elevators. So unless you are prepared to descend at least 3 flights of stairs do not use this option.

All subway would probably have fewer stairs. And there is no "station" at street level 125th St - just a corner to wait on for the bus. Frankly I would walk to Columbia - but it's mostly uphill.

If walking or a lot of stairs are an issue I would get a car service

Michael pretty much called it.

From Fordham U take a 207th St bound BX12 SBS bus (on Fordham Rd just outside of Fordham U) to 10th Av in Manhattan (207th St station on the 1 train - it is an elevated station so you can't miss it).

Take the DOWNTOWN 1 train to the 116th St station (on Broadway). Columbia will upstairs at street level.

This is the most direct method and least time consuming. The other suggestions: MetroNorth to 125th St and then the M60, the D train to 125th St and then the local to 116th St and then walk are - in my opinion - time consuming and take you out of your way.

Note to Nytraveler - the MetroNorth station is at 125th St & Park Av and is 1 flight above street level and there are elevators. You are thinking of the 125th St station on the 1 train. That is at 125th & Broadway. There are elevators and escalators at this station.

For all the hype about HOPSTOP - it doesn't have much when it comes to the travel by public transportation.
