Oregon Coast & Portland in July
We will be traveling on the coast and into Portland on and following the 4th of July. I know that this the height of the tourist season but we don't really have any alternative.
I know the prices will be out of sight but will we be having trouble if we don't make reservations ahead of time.
I grew up on the coast but it has been awhile since I have been there.
The last time we were there we stayed in the Inn at Otter Crest and enjoyed it but there have been some negative reviews. Comment?? :-B

I dont think the prices will be out of sight at the time- this is not soouthern California afterall and Jul 4th we are really just starting summer here. I think you should be able to find lots of reasonably priced places to stay.
Havent stayed at the Inn at Otter Crest but looks like a great place -

If you want to stay on the northern coast (Cannon Beach,Seaside) area, make reservations now. We have a beach cottage in Seaside and had to reserve for our family back in September for the 4th of July.
The central and southern coastal areas should be easier to get into without a reservation for the 4th. Good Luck! ***kim***

Inn at Otter Crest was very nice when I lived over there (granted it was 7 years ago) Salishan was highly regarded as well. I worked and lived at "The Hotel Newport"which is now a Best Western. I am not sure of the quality they keep but the location and views are great. It is located on Agate Beach just outside Newport on the North side of town. The beach is a great place to go even if your not staying at the hotel. Get there first thing in the morning after a storm or very high tide and the beach glistens with all the agates on the beach.
I would definately make reservations ahead of time for wherever you want to stay though...prices shouldnt be terrible unless you wait till the last second. We went up the coast at the end of last summer without reservations and paid dearly for a bed. In Portland you might check out priceline for a good deal. Make sure to visit biddingfortravel.com before placing your bid though. Good luck!

This is the Portland Visitors Assoc website, a great source for you to browse.
There will be a Blues Festival in town around the 4th of July, along the Riverfront.
It is a busy time, and I hear, after July 4th is when the weather really turns very nice.
I would think, as well as others have said that in the city as well as the beaches, you must make some sort of reservation..the alternative could really ruin a nice trip.
I like Cannon Beach myself

Hi ed! You may want to consider the Cannery Pier Hotel in Astoria. We toured the property yesterday and fell in love! They have done an outstanding job with everything here from the decorating to the full service spa. It's quite a place! ***kim***
