We're planning on a trip up the Oregon coast...any suggestion for lodging?

The most often recommended is Stephanie Inn at Cannon Beach. Everything about the place, from the rooms to the restaurant, is high end. The Cannon Beach Hotel would also be a good choice. It's not ocean front, but welcoming nonetheless, and its restaurant, Gower St. Bistro, is one of the better in town. If you go to Cannon Beach, you'll want to take your camera to Ecola State Park.

At the other end of the spectrum is the Sylvia Beach Hotel, down the coast in Newport. It's an older B&B type place with rooms themed after famous authors (avoid the E.A. Poe room!). Tables of Content, the restaurant, serves some surprisingly good food.

Further yet down the coast in Yachats is Overleaf Lodge. Nice, but comparatively basic accommodations here. And no restaurant. But the view is hard to beat.

I'll also plug Tu Tu Tun Lodge near Gold Beach. It's six miles up the Rogue River from the coast, but is consistently ranked in the top 50 of best small hotels/inns in the country. Dinners, though served family style at tables for eight, compare favorably with any restaurant on the coast.

We live on the east coast and every year we go to Mendocino California...I can't wait to drive north & explore Oregon..up the coast & then into Portland!!

There are a number of good choices in Portland. Fifth Avenue Suites seems a consensus favorite amongst fodorites who visit Portland. Vintage Plaza, Heathman, Paramount, and Governor are also often mentioned. Priceline bidders usually end up in the Benson, which is where the president stays when he comes to town. If you like funky, consider the Kennedy School or Edgefield Manor, historic buildings converted to lodging by McMenamins, a popular local brewer.

Ecola State Park is a no-brainer, but for other photo ops, having admired your work, I'm not sure I feel "worthy". The southern coast, particularly between Brookings and Port Orford, has countless sea/beachscape possiblities, often right from the highway. Every mile or two there's a sign pointing to yet another viewpoint. Then there are lighthouses (Haceta Head is supposedly the most photographed spot in Oregon) and sand dunes...... I suspect you'd also like the "old towns" of Bandon and Newport, and maybe Depot Bay.

Portland has several cool bridges, urban parks, markets, gardens, streetscapes..... That's not to mention the Columbia River gorge and Mt. Hood. I can be more specific if you'd like, but I'd hesitate to point you to my PBase site!
