Oregon Coast Itinerary Help
Hi Evedryone. I loved my little time in Cannon beach so much that I actually recommended this trip to my director (she loves the beach) and so now, she is planning a week long trip. She was planning to stay in Cannon Beach the whole entire time just grabbing a taxi to drop her off there from Portland and scheduling a pickup when she leaves. I have succesfully encouraged her, however, to hire a car instead (she doesn't usually) and recommended she drive down the coast since most of you mentioned before that furthre south is prettier.
So now, can you help with her week long itinerary? I imagine she starts out at Cannon Beach for a couple of days then what? I thought maybe a couple of days somewhere in the middle coast area and another couple in the south area then head back up? Where would you guys recommend those coastal towns to be and what BnB/Inn she stay that is not too expensive but nice with ocean view rooms?
Many thanks in advance.

Oh, one more thing. She is in her mid 40's and there will be 2 of them so someone to share the driving. Not very big on hiking but likes long walks at the beach, spas/jacuzzi (sp?) and general relaxation.
I remember thinking Cannon Beach was perfect for her because Schooner's Cove had a jacuzzi/spa and the Inn was withing walking distance to the little town - and the type of town she would be interested in as well.
Again, many many thanks for your help.
Scarlett - Beachbum, Mauimary, Orcas, and others? I hope you're around to recommend places?

Mind if anyone else answers? I am a Portland local and we just returned from Cannon Beach today.
I feel like a walking poster for the SurfSand Resort, but it really is a great place. They are in the middle of a major remodel, but the ocean front building is completed and it is a great hotel. We have stayed her many times, and it just gets better and better. The hotel looks out to Haystack Rock and is a short walk into the main part of downtown. There are many amenities including a pool and jacuzzis in the rooms, and it is the only resort on the Oregon coast with cabana service. They have beach umbrellas/chairs/towels set out each day for your use, as well as kites and beach toys. Last night they made a bon fire for our group and brought us all the items to make s'mores.

mms, of course! you were so helful during my trip. I'll mention that to her although I think she was pretty set on schooner's cove (little less expensive, I think). However, what do you think about the middle coast area and the southern most town on the oregon coast?
And just to clarify, it was more fodorites than I mentioned above that helped me with my Oergon trip back in April. The ones I mentioned were just the first few that came to mind so please don't think I didn't appreciate your help if you did give me advice before. I think just to mention a few more there was also FainaAgain, happytrailstoyou, gardyloo, Andrew and a few others.

Maria--Don't worry I am not much help with the central part of the coast. I went there a lot many years ago since it was closer to where I grew up...but since it has been a while I hate to comment.

Hi maria_so. The Three Capes Loop is one of my favorite drives. It starts in Tillamook and goes out to Oceanside (lunch at Rosanne's I think it's called). There's a lighthouse to visit on a short walk and an octopus tree at the same spot. The southernmost loop goes by a state park where you park in the day use area and walk out on the beautiful dunes.
There is also a great hiking trail there, at Cape Lookout, but it is not for people who don't like hiking.
That loop drive is about a day trip and then you go on down the road. I'm not sure where you stay south. I'd go quickly through Lincoln City, which is pretty nondescript. The Yaquina Head Light House just north of Newport has a good visitors center and is a nice viewpoint. If they like funky and books, the Sylvia Beach Hotel in Newport is an experience. Further south, Yachats is lovely. The views from the Cape Perpetua, which is still further south, are stunning. I'm not familiar enough with the area south of this to speak much about it, but check other posts on this, as much is written. It is a long coastline and I wouldn't suggest trying to cover too much of it in a week. Two nights in Canon Beach, one around Newport (though that's a long drive if you do the three capes loop), two in Yachats...just an idea. Looking forward to hearing more suggestions.

Yachats is soothing.

Here are 2 places with spas, and beach.
The Shamrock is really cool-on the south side of the River's entrance to the sea.
There are a variety of places on this list:

We have always stayed funky at the Rock Park Cottages,

where you are next to the Beach and can walk around town and not get in the car for 2 days if you want.
Our favorite town on the Coast.

Hi maria so! We are at our beach cottage in Seaside right now but did venture down to Newport on Sat. to visit the aquarium. I checked out the Sylvia Beach Hotel in Nye Beach. It's really cool, painted in an Aquamarine color and the back rooms have great views of the ocean.
Lincoln City was very pretty. Our friends were staying at the Coho Inn which they said was OK, but not their favorite place to stay. I would recommend a stop at the Cape Foulweather Lookout and Gift Shop. We loved the views from the gift shop there.
Depoe Bay is a nice little town with some great scenery also. The Channel House B&B gets recommended there a lot. I would recommend the Blackfish Cafe for a nice meal in Linclon City.
We had lunch at the Salishan Lodge & Spa in Gleneden Beach, it was gorgeous. Their spa is absolutely beautiful there. ***kim***

Thanks kimamom! I have forwarded this to her too.
Anyone else have any suggestions regarding mid to most southern oregon coast area? She's out this week visiting family and is also using that time to plan the oregon trip. Any recommendations are welcome.

How far south do you want to go? Bandon is a great stop witrh an excellent restauant in The Wild Rose and several interesting stores. We usually stay at the Lighthouse B&B, which has a great view of the lighthouse and is walking distance from downtown. If you want something fancier, try the Best Western, which is right on the oceanfront.

I stayed at the Overleaf Lodge in Yachats this past March and really liked it--it's not super luxurious but it's *right* above the ocean and a good value, I think. I think it's a do-able drive from the Cannon Beach area--I drove between the two places in the other direction and stopped at the Newport Aquarium, had lunch at Pelican Bay Brewery (I think that's the name) at the south end of the Three Capes drive, did the 5 mile Cape Lookout Trail and drove the rest of the loop and still made it to Cannon Beach by late afternoon (and I didn't start out at the crack of dawn either ;-)).
Further south, I really, really like Tu Tu Tun Lodge in Gold Beach. It's 7 miles up from the coast on the Rogue River but it's a really special place, IMO. It's on the pricey side but worth the splurge, I think. Otherwise Bandon and the surrounding area is quite nice if she doesn't want to drive down as far as Gold Beach before turning around. It's been a while, but I stayed at a place called the Seastar Guesthouse that I like.

In Mid-coast...just a little south of Salishan is a great place to stay. Cavalier Condiminiums...two bedrooms...two baths right on the beach. They are large with full kitchens so you can eat out or stay in and relax. Privately owned and most have videos, puzzles, games. etc. Our favorite spot.
A great restaurant in Lincoln City is Blackfish Cafe. Very good food.
