We're a family of 6 adults and 4 little girls who'll be staying in Bend for a week in early July, then driving to the coast for a couple of days before flying out of PDX. We're thinking of Newport area on or very near the beach and would very much appreciate suggestions for lodging. Our main objectives are to be close to the beach, the aquarium, some shops & restaurants. We're certainly open to suggestions of other areas on the coast to stay. We're not opposed to staying one night in say Newport & the next closer to Portland (but still on the coast). We will need to stay a third night in Portland as we're flying out Monday night. Thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions!

I love the Yachats area which is just south of Newport. There are 3 motels in a row the Fireside,

the Adobe and the Overleaf. The Overleaf is the most high end of the 3. All of them are oceanfront. The Adobe has a restaurant which is handy- some of the rooms at the Adobe have kitchens -
I usually stay in the Yachats area but I love the Newport area too-

I think driving a bit up the very scenic Oregon coast for your 2nd night would be great - and I also like the Surfrider - overlooking Depoe Bay - just south of Lincoln City. http://www.surfriderresort.com/

And while Yacats is also very pretty/nice place to stay - from near Lincoln City - you can take a hiway that will drop you in Portland in a couple of hours, maybe less if needed.

As much as I love Bend, I wouldn't stay there for an entire week. Are you staying in Sunriver?
Leaving Bend/Sunriver head south on US97 to Rt. 138 to head for the north entrance of Crater Lake NP. See Crater Lake and exit back through the north entrance if you can't get rooms at the lodge. Stay at Diamond Lake. They have lodge rooms and cabins.
From Diamond Lake head west through Roseburg. A couple exit north on I-5 head west on 138 for Reedsport. Just before Reedsport stop to see the Roosevelt elk from the viewing area.
Make sure to stop at the Oregon Coast Aquarium south of Newport. Just north of Tillamook, stop at the Tillamook cheese factory for good cheese and ice cream.
You will find that lodging is a little cheaper in Seaside than in Cannon Beach.
You can turn in your rental car early in Portland and then take the red line light rail out to the airport.
Make sure to spend an hour or more in Powell's Books (on Burnside). It is Oregon's largest bookstore.

A number of places on the central and north coasts prefer two-night minimum stays at times in the summer. Best to confirm any such requirements when looking for accommodations.

There are many advantages to staying in Newport--lots to do and a big selection of eating places. We stay at the Hallmark, which has large, fresh rooms with big balconies overlooking the ocean. The property has a popular, family-friendly restaurant.

There is so much to do in/around Bend, so enjoy!

As for the coast, with little kids, I would opt for Newport. There are several good hotels in the Nye Beach area, which is a prime spot, IMO. The Hallmark which was mentioned is one, but two others are the Shilo and Elizabeth Street Inn. We have stayed at both, with our preference being ESI. These hotels sit up on a bluff, so to get down to the beach you either go down about 80 stairs, or walk a block to the main Nye Beach entrance area and there is a paved path down to it. If for some reason any of these don't work for your dates/budget, take a look at the Holiday Inn Express near the aquarium. It does not have any ocean views, but it is very nice and within walking distance of the aquarium.

There is a lot to do/see in Newport with kids, so I would stay a few nights there. The beaches (Nye Beach is right in town), the aquarium, Hatfield Science Center, the bayfront, shops/restaurants/ice cream shops in Nye Beach, Yaquina Head and Yaquina Bay Lighthouses, and quite a few stops between Newport and Yachats. Seal Rock is one that the kids would love to explore the tidepools.

Otherwise further north on the coast, closer to Portland, we opt for Cannon Beach. The only issue here is that most places require a 2-3 night minimum stay in high season, so you would need to factor that in. That said, we often head over at the last minute and can squeeze in between the other reservations, so if you can work that angle it would fit in your timeframe. Otherwise the areas of Manzanita (just south of CB) and Seaside (just north of CB) do not have the usual minimum night stays. As much as Seaside grates on my nerves, there are more lodging options there. Manzanita has a lot of rental homes, but there are only a handful of hotels and well, let's just say that I won't return to the one we have stayed at, and it is the best one there.

I recently made a reservation in Cannon Beach for August 2014. As has been mentioned, some places require a THREE night minimum while others do not.

Lincoln City, which is 25 miles north of Newport, has 7 miles of walkable beach, great for hunting agates and tide pooling. There is a list of all the lodging options in the area at www.oregoncoast.org.

lcvcb, I notice you have just one other thread you posted on and you mentioned that you work for the Lincoln City Visitors' Bureau. It would be the decent thing to do if you could mention it.

For the OP, I am not a big fan of Lincoln City as it is really 3 (or originally 5) cities all along Hwy 101; these grew together and merged into Lincoln City. We could rout out the real Oregonians by quizzing them on what those cities were ie Taft.

During peak times, it takes a really long time to get from north to south in Lincoln City. So 7 miles of stoplights to match those beaches. The casino is pleasant as far as they go, and I've been for concerts. There are also factory outlets in town. The Christmas store in Lincoln City is worth a visit.

I'd stick with Newport myself.

Cannon Beach is usually more expensive than say the Surfrider at Depoe Bay - plus Cannon Beach can be packed on weekends with many from Portland coming over for the weekend.
