Oahu or Big Island luau?

Anyone have any recommendations for a luau on either Oahu or BI?
Our plan is to spend 1 or 2 nights in Honolulu, 1 or 2 nights in VNP and remainder of nights (7 nights total) on Kohala coast (Outrigger Waikoloa).

Why waste money on a tacky touristy luau when you can have a good meal at a beautiful oceanside restaurant?

On the Big Island, I HIGHLY recommend the luau at the Kona Village Resort ( http://www.konavillage.com/ ). It's not as hoakie as other luau, more realistic and relaxed.
Other nights, go where the "locals" go for seafood. Better deals, fun atmosphere and not so touristy.

Your itinerary sounds like ours on our first trip to Hawaii. One night at VNP was enough for us, as we wanted to get back to the coast. Just depends on what you enjoy. We snorkeled, swam, explored, and just had fun!

I agree with Joe. Luaus are the biggest tourist racket in Hawaii !! But then there are may people who love the tacky touristy things.

Well....the luaus also try to educate you on the ancient culture, as well. Paradise Cove luau on Oahu has an arts & crafts section where you can get abbreviated lessons. The entertainment was also revamped to show you hula through the ages and the difference between Polynesian cultures.
