NYC -- nail polish?

Very important, I know.

Curious: what is the prevalent color in nail polish these days in the city? A friend told me gray -- is that true -- and if so, what is the name of it, specifically?

And if it's something different altogether, would love that advice, too.

(I remember, fondly, 15 years ago when there was a run on "ballet slippers!"...but I don't live there anymore : (

Thanks, much in advance!

Depends on your style and age. Have not seen gray. Have seen everyting from a traditional French manicure to the usual summer colors (pale pink, peach and coral) to bright reds to yellow, birght blue and aqua. No grey.

Never seen grey, mostly see lighter colours in the summer, from clear to light shades. Will ask when I get my nails done on Saturday.

If anyone is coming to NYC, he/she will quickly notice that there are about 3,000 nail salons in Manhattan alone. An easy way to make sure you are in sync on the nail colors is to stop into one of those salons and have your nails done upon arrival.

Hi Kit,

I'm a bit nail polish obsessed and this thread caught my eye. I have to agree with your friend, gray is a hot color. I have a bottle from Sephora OPI called MetroChic that I love. It's kind of a purple-gray and I get a lot of compliments on it. I love that it's neutral but not boring.

I wore it a lot in the fall and winter, but with the sun coming out full-time again a lot more summer shades are coming out. I think turquoise for the summer months is going to be really big.

I agree that it's about following your personal style and that most anything goes. I'm pretty waspy (and also work in a more conservative environment)so I would personally go with a purple/grey or neutral.

Metro Chic was ridiculously popular and sold out in Philadelphia last year when it came out. From "regular OPI" You Don't Know Jaques is also a good one, though maybe a bit too muddy for this late in the spring.

For what's trendy, I'd look to the latest season's offering from Chanel. Also, if you're polish obsessed, you probably already follow the blogs, eg, All Laquered Up and others I can't think of bc they're favorites on my home computer and I am procrastinating right now at work.

For traveling, I swear by the OPI no-chip manicure. But that will limit your color choices even further. . .

Have fun in NYC!

Oh, Doug...that is exactly what I plan : ) I used to live there...and dearly miss the efficiency of the 10 minute manicure!

Thanks for the specific names of the colors, too. The magazines seem to be showing dove grays and taupes and light metallics -- which I love...but I will check out the blogs, too.

Thanks for indulging a light topic : )

I just heard yesterday that Chanel's turquoise is the most in demand color and that it's going for $300 a bottle on ebay. Personally, I'd prefer a color I like to whatever the hottest color is.

Don't disagree, Grasshopper...but since I change nail colors like I change socks, I thought it might be fun to get the perspective from a different part of the country. And then a week later, I'll probably change again.

Gray is the hottest color right now. One great color is Chinchilly, by Essie.

The coolest shade this season is Chanel's Particuliere (greyish taupe_ and it is sold out in a lot of stores (those I did see it on the Chanel website a couple of weeks ago). I dont personally care for it but people on Makeupalley.com, popular makeup site, are crazy for it

I put on some Sally Hansen version of the gray lavender and showed my husband and he said I looked like a cadaver

I picked a pinky cocoa color but I will still try the gray.

Is a matte finish popular anywhere? I tried a OPI in a sort of burgundy matte shade and I really liked it. I told the manicurist no topcoat that I wanted it matte. She put on a topcoat anyway and seemed really confused about wanting a dull finish! I found a clear matte topcoat that I want to try on some of my darker colors.
