NYC - Lower East Side - which walking tour?
Has anyone done either of the following 2 tours? Any good or bad comments on your experience? The tours are both in the Lower East Side, although offer a slightly different slant on the area. I'm considering doing one of them on the same day I visit the Tenement Museum.
One concern I had with Big Onion was the possible group size. They seem to have no maximum number on their tours. Is that correct?
Big Onion - Jewish Lower East Side; 2 hours; $15.
Tenement Museum - Lower East Side Stories; 90 mins; $17 (cheaper with combined museum tour).

We just returned from NY yesterday. We took a wonderful two hour tour of the Lower East Side with Michelle Nevius tours. Her husband James was our guide. We had 4 people and paid $20 per person. This is a private tour and I don't know what he would charge for one or two persons. He was informative, pleasant, brought historical photographs, and really left us with a vivid image of what life was like for different immigrant populations during different time periods. The tour included Chinatown and Little Italy. I highly recommend.
It would be very easy to combine this with the tenement museum, where you go INSIDE this one tenement that was restored to its original condition, and visit with or view actors playing the parts of actual inhabitants of the building. The advance spots for the tenement museum were sold out so we will have to leave that for the next trip. I know that the tenement museum offers a walking tour, which had been recommended to us, but we elected the private Nevius tour instead.
You can check out the Nevius tours at walknyc.com I believe.

In researching for my Aug. trip to NYC, I came across Big Apple tours, and have read many positive reviews about them. They are done with native volunteers, and are free. http://www.bigapplevisitorscenter.com/gt.htm
