I know that when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, the Rose Bowl parade and the game are put off until Monday. This being the case, we want to fly to Las Vegas and stay for a few days, celebrate New Year's Eve there and then leave the next day for Pasadena for the parade on Monday. Any suggestions on where to stay and where to sit to watch?
If my calculations are correct, this will not come around again until 2018!

You could stay at the Courtyard Marriott on North Fair Oaks and walk two blocks to the parade route on Colorado Boulevard.

Or you could stay in downtown L.A. and take the Gold Line train into Pasadena. First train is at 3:40 am from Union Station, and the journey to Memorial Station takes about 40 minutes. From the Memorial Station, it's about two blocks to Colorado Boulevard.

In either case, I'd buy grandstand tickets for viewing the parade.

Go to Sharp Seating for the R Parade Tickets...buy seats on the corner of orange grove and colorado - best view of the parade!

Especially when new year's eve falls on a Saturday. We made that mistake once, never again.

Thank you, I appreciate all you responses. Can I ask those who found it bad with the crowds to elaborate a little. How is it different then other nights. I mean, how many people are we talking about? And are the rooms and restaurants filled? We don't mind crowds as long as we can still do what we want to which is walk around, enjoy all the outside "shows", see the hotels, eat, and we do just a little gambling. I have wanted to

I did it once. I think the only time you might experience an issue is on the actual night of New Year's Eve. It may be difficult to get into some of the restaurants. However, with so many choices in Las Vegas, you will be able to find somewhere to have a nice dinner. The strip closes down to vehicles early in the evening and starts to fill up with people. The strip gets filled with lots of drunken revelers. I didn't find it particularly bothersome. However, I wouldn't pay the exorbitant hotel prices that you will run into over that period. Many of the hotels will have minumum night stays.

A couple years ago, DW and I stayed at a hotel (no casino) south of I-215 west of Henderson on NYE. The room was nice, I could watch the fireworks from the window and then saw Robbie Knevil jump the fountains at the Bellagio on the television.
The next day I flew with a bunch of Penn State fans from LV to LAX. I do not enjoy driving through Barstow to LA.

If you buy tickets for Orange Grove at Colorado area, don't buy them facing east or else the very strong sun will be in your face. Those stands are in front of the townhouses. I've lived in Pasadena for over 40 years and also lived walking distance from that point of the parade route for nearly 20 years. In the past, I have bought tickets in that stand as they were cheaper than in the stand across the street. I remember it was 70 degrees and the sun was very strong.

As for if you don't buy a ticket, then you will need to sleep on the street like all of the other folks. Bring a beach chair and blankets. On parade day, you are not allowed to stand along the sidewalks to watch the parade. The police will remove you. Happy Travels!
