Must see at Lassen

Must see at Lassen
Hi,
We are planning a trip to Lassen and were wondering what are the must see places in the park. I read a lot of great recommendations for burney falls, but I was wondering what are the things to see/do at Lassen itself. We are planning on spending a couple of days at mineral or redding. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lassen is wonderful - But Redding is not. At least during the summer. If it is 100F down in Sacramento, it is 110F in Redding.
Stay at Lake Almanor, or even over in Susanville if you cannot find a room in Mineral.
Definitely visit MacArthur/Burney Falls - unbelievable. In the Park itself a lot depends on how much hiking you want to do. Some of the most interesting sites include Bumpas Hell, the Sulphur Works Thermal pools and mud pots, Butte Lake, and Chaos Crags.
Stay at Lake Almanor, or even over in Susanville if you cannot find a room in Mineral.

I also think Bumpass Hell is well worth the trip.
I enjoyed hiking to the top of the volcano cone itself. The trail is not bad and views of Mt. Shasta are lovely.
There is a lot to see there. Enjoy your trip.

After I read Janis' post, I started to look for lodging in the Chester/Almanor area. I found a couple of lists of motels/B&Bs etc, but I am having trouble finding any reviews/ratings about them online. My AAA tour book does not seem to have them listed either.
Some of the places that I am looking at are: Black forest lodge, chester manor motel, child's meadow resort, and lake almanor resort. Please let me know about your experiences either in these or any orther area loding. Thanks!

First of all - do remember that is a mountain area and many places are fairly rustic. Lake Almanor Resort is nice - on the lake with decent cabins, lawn/beach, BBQ's etc. Another good place is Bidwell House in Chester. I have't stayed there but it looks really nice. A big old farm house with a big front porch and a sort of cottagey garden.
(Like you, I find my AAA book is becoming less and less useful - only a fraction of places are listed and the ratings/rates often bear no relation to reality. But I still get the books every year - just habit I guess. I usually search the net first and then check the book just to see if there is any other info)
