Money for Maui

Hi. going to Maui in Oct. and was trying to figure how much money to take. Can any of you former Maui-travelers tell me if most gas stations, restaurants, etc accept debit cards? Would like to keep my most of my cash in my checking account and pay with a debit card. Thanks!

As long as your debit card has a mastercard or visa logo on it, it will be accepted anywhere that a credit card (MC or Visa) is accepted. If your card is a regular ATM card with no logo, then you will probably have to go to ATM's and get cash.

The only places we came across that didn't take a charge/debit card were some of the very laid back, local places to eat. Gas was no problem. Be prepared for high prices for gas. They were generally around $1.89, give or take a few cents a gallon!

Also, be prepared for high prices on food.....especially restaurants. You can save a little by stocking up at the grocery store for some bascis (like sodas, fruit and breakfast foods). Be aware that meals will cost you considerably more than what you are probably used to on the mainland.

We used a credit card and had no problems, I cant speak to debit cards. You will spend more than you expect so take credit cards with you. Maui is wonderful but quite pricey.

Have to differ with Jim. I spend very little but I stay away from commercial activities and eating out regularly. I like to have about $200 on me just because it is convenient to not have to think about where and when you will be popping by an ATM. I feel this way mainly on the first couple of days and in from the East Coast. Actually this is also my rule for foreign countries so it is not necessarily a Maui money thing. After getting situated I really don't feel the need for a lot of cash on hand certainly not in the islands.
