It depends on if you prefer TexMex or real Mexican food. For TexMex, my favorite is Cozymel's, in West Little Rock (10 Shackleford Court). They make their own tortillas and the food always taste fresh to me. I also like On the Border, also in West Little Rock (11721 Chenal Parkway), but the service there is really hit or miss. Some people like Tia's but I wouldn't go there on purpose.
For real Mexican, there are lots of small places all over town that serve great food. The first one that comes to mind for me is El Acapulco Authentic Mexican Restaurant (Market Street, West Little Rock). I've been several times and always liked it. Casa Manana is another place that is popular around here but I haven't been there in several years so I can't really give a first person account.

El Porton is still around and seems to be a popular place. I am one who is not a fan,but others seem to really enjoy it. It's located in a shopping center along Bowman/Markham.
One other place I thought of that's a favorite of mine is in the community of Bryant (right outside of LR)--Mi Ranchito-Dos. It's a delicious authentic Mexican restaurant that's never too busy and always gets the food out quickly, yet it's still delicious.

I checked out Doe's website. They say they are located in a not-so-elegant
neighborhood and have a chaperon to take you to your car. Anyone know if the neighborhood is really that bad??

I've lived in Little Rock for decades and am not familiar with any authentic Mexican restaurants here.
As for Doe's location, it's not that bad. It's downtown, but there's a security guard there at night and I've never felt less than safe there. Having said that, it's definitely not a Mexican restaurant...it's a steak place, and a fairly expensive one at that. Yes, they serve tamales and chili, but more as appetizers than main courses. Steaks are sold by the pound and shrimp are sold by the dozen or half dozen. (Example: 1/2 dozen broiled shrimp are $10.50)
