Leaf change in Northern MI

DH and I headed to in-laws cottage for a few days over this long week-end. We were amazed at the amount of color in the maple leaves. This was in the area between Grayling and Kalkaska. Peak color could be early this year.

Yup, we have had very little rain this summer, and normally I would suggest people come up the 10/6-14 (using this years calender), but it looks like that will be too late this year!

I was in the Mackinac Straits area this past weekend, There was color, but just the trees that are usually turned by this time of year.

It was really windy Friday. Almost like the Equinox weather. The waves on the Straits were as high as I have ever seen: http://www.mightymac.org/windybridge.htm

To get the scale of those waves, look at the size of the vehicles on the Mackinac Bridge.

Keith, were they allowing cars to drive across the bridge singly or did they have caravans? I've been on the bridge in a caravan and can't imagine what it must have been like this week-end.

The caravans were limited to semis and vehicles pulling trailers. Cars were going over on their own. Opps, crossing on their own, "going over" sounds diferent

Neat pictures, Keith. I also saw a little color inland where it gets colder earlier. Looked like older trees. Much more color to come.

The St. Ignace News said 57,000 walked the bridge on Labor Day, up from 47,200 last year. They had to extend the hours. Because of your great pictures? Also there were 54 members of Dire Straits swim team (love that name) making the swim.

The weather the day before and after was lousy, but beautiful on Walk Day.

Next year you must come back.

I was near Naubinway on 9/15 and the trees were gearing up. I was seeing some color, nothing breathtaking but I knew it wouldn't be long. Wow

I have the webcams at Michigan Tech bookmarked. The color in Houghton is developing nicely.
