Las Vegas First-Timers

We've lived in CA for decades and have never been the least bit interested in going to Las Vegas, but we're Cirque du Soleil fans who want to see "O." Neighbors who have been to Las Vegas are planning to go with us. They're suggesting staying at Mandalay Bay, Paris Las Vegas, NY NY, or Mirage. Which of these hotels would you recommend?

I'm checking Travelzoo and some of the other discount sites. NY NY is offering a promo with an upgrade for $150/night. Would you suggest we book it or keep looking?

I checked Bidding for Travel where there appear to be a lot of discount codes, but they all seem to be out of date. Is there a secret to getting a good hotel rate?

We're planning to go in late October. I've checked the LV Chamber of Commerce site to be sure we avoid a huge convention.

Looks like the title to the message posted, and can't be changed, before I had a chance to add that I'm asking for info about a hotel!

Any information you can provide will be appreciated.

Sorry about the double post. I tried to edit the title, but it didn't quite work.

If you have money to spend, anyone of these casinos is ok.

I'm cheap when it comes to staying in Las Vegas. I prefer the "Old Town". Great rooms at a great, cheap price. For $150 a night, how long will you be in that room? A room is a room. A bed and bathroom is all you need. TV also. Why spend $$$ for a room that you are in for 7-9 hours a day and spend $150+???

Check-out the old town casinos. Some still have the penny slots...

A room is a room. Be cheap so you can put the savings back into a slot machine.....

I have to strongly disagree with Pretzel. I think the hotel you choose is a big part of the whole experience. For me, choosing the hotel is the most important part of the trip. Of the hotels you've mentioned, I would recommend Paris or Mirage for two reasons - VERY nice hotels and great locations. Mandalay Bay is beautiful, but the location is not ideal. It's a long way to the mid-strip.

I have never stayed at NY, NY, but I'm sure it's fine. The lobby and casino don't appeal to me as much, but that's just me. Monte Carlo could also give you a great rate and gets good reviews.

If you are going over a weekend in October, the prices will be high. It's a prime time for Vegas and weekends are always expensive. You can usually find a deal Sunday - Thursday.

I suggest you go into the websites of the hotels you are interested in and registered for their e-mail promotions. I like to book directly through the hotel rather than through a third party.

Have fun. I know you are planning to see "O", which is great. If you're Beatles fans, see LOVE, as well. It's fabulous!

Try vegas-promotions.com for hotel rates. Also the hotel websites. I've stayed at the Paris several times and it's lovely. Centrally located and right across from the Bellagio where O is. Be sure to go to the pastry/coffee shop at Paris--the pastries are almost too beautiful to eat. This year we're trying the Venetian--got a rate of $139 from the website I gave you. I agree with the others about NY NY and Mandalay Bay. And also about O--I've seen it twice and would definitely go again.

www.cheapovegas.com

I'll also agree that the hotel DOES make a difference, and I'm not a fan of downtown. Stay on the Strip! Of the ones I've stayed at (Monte Carlo, Caesar's, Bally's), my favorite was Caesar's. But they were all nice! Mandalay Bay is great, but it is all the way down at the end of the Strip, and I wouldn't recommend that for your first visit.

Make sure there's not a big convention in town while you're there...

I'd say Paris. But my first choice would be the Venetian - I loved it!

For a weekend in October, your price is a decent one. That is a very popular time, as Mikesmom mentioned.

I really like staying at Mandalay Bay, but I always have my car, so getting around is not a problem. Not sure what the temps will be like in late October, but Mandalay Bay has an amazing pool area with a sandy beach, if that interests you. I think NYNY is worth a visit, but I stayed there once, and didn't care for it. It does have a great Irish Pub called 9 Fine Irishmen.
If you can get a great rate at someplace like Bellagio, Wynn, or the Venetian, grab it. If not, Mirage and Caesars are nice mid-strip places.
As for "O", its one of the most amazing live shows I've ever seen, you'll never forget it.

Do not listen to the advice of "Pretzel"..
Part of Vegas is the Hotel and Casinos where you are and if you can get a room for $150 at NY NY with upgrade, thats sounds like a pretty good deal for late October.
I would stay on the strip but do head out to the Fremont Experience for the light show..I am a Wynn girl but love going downtown..I win more there.
Checked on Expedia and things are starting to get in the $200 for late October.
Have a great time!

The Venetian is a very good hotel for a first time experience. The location is excellent. Depending on when you are going you can snag it mid-week on Priceline for $119/nt. Mandalay Bay, while a great hotel, is at the far end of the stip which makes a rental car a good idea if you're planning to see all of the strip. Taxi lines can be horrendous depending on the time if you're looking to do that each day to get about.

Thanks so much for your replies. We are not gamblers but will probably stay on the strip for a Las Vegas "immersion" experience. I'll register for the hotel promotions and check the rates on the links you posted.

I don’t gamble either, but would never stay off-strip and certainly not downtown. That sounds like a good price and for your first time I think you should definitely stay in a good hotel. The first time I went with my husband we stayed at the MGM Grand and the rooms were really beautiful. The next time we stayed at Bally’s because we got a good price. If you can get that cheap it’s a good compromise because the rooms are nice enough and the location is great.

For the first time, Paris or Mirage - those 2 have a more central location.

Are you thinking of Priceline? Most of those hotels/casinos, even the dumps, have high stars status, or "strip" location.

Sign up with each hotel to get promotions in e-mails. When are you going? Weekdays or weekend? Maybe you can make a refundable reservation and wait?

definitely try checking the site Jo1023 mentioned (http://www.vegas-promotions.com) I used it to find a deal at TI for four nights for only $89 per night. Pretty satisfied.
