I live in LA and have 3 kids, one girl 15 2 boys here is what they love in LA...
Venice Beach...great people watching, shopping with cheap clothes and jewelery
Manhattan Beach- great swimming, stores, restaurants
Magic Mountain- roller costers
Hollywood and Highland- great to walk around, see hollywood stars, My kids all love the Ripleys believe it or not museum which is on the corner, the Hollywood Wax museum is also there.
Universal City Walk- just fun
Beaches are all beautiful, some favorites- Zuma, Hermosa, Manhattan, Santa Monica and Venice are fun for walking around but the beaches aren't as nice
3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica
If you like to hike- Malibu State Park , lots of hikes off of PCH going north from Santa Monica
It is a great city...I love LA, born and raised....wouldn't live anywhere else

I just saw that you are only here for 4 days, sorry I threw a lot at you...
Day 1- Go to Venice, walk around, rent bikes ride north to Santa Monica, walk around the pier, have lunch, ride back to Vencie spend time on the beach, then go back to hotel..rest
dinner at 3rd St promenade in Santa Monica
Day 2- hollywood and highland...walk around..ripleys or wax museum for fun..The El Capitan theater is on Hollywood Blvd they often have disney shows before the movies (prob Toystory 3) lots of fun...you could also take the metro (red line) north to the Universal City exit and go up to City Walk for an early dinner..then back to hotel.
Day 3- Drive north up PCH, get out of the city. Stop in Malibu and watch the surfers...stop at Paradise Cove and have lunch on the beach, then change into your suits and just relax walk north for some movie star siteing. Just relax there allllll day
Day 4- ?? Beverly Hills ?, The Grove is fun (3rd St. and La Brea?) There is an American Girl store there...girls love that

There is the usual places the girls would like. Also, the La Brea Tar pits are interesting. http://www.tarpits.org/
We liked The Huntington Library. http://www.huntington.org/ The Japanese Tea Garden was beautiful. There is so much to see there.
