Laguardia to Mid-Town

Just checked with ny.com and they estimate a taxi to mid-town at $16-26 plus tolls ($3).

SuperShuttle (blue van) is $32 for two people.

How realistic is that taxi fare? And is a taxi that much quicker than SuperShuttle?

Thanks.

Fare's about right. Taxi usually is quicker (depends on where you are on the pick-up order for the Shuttle), but would add that taxi is much more reliable. Most of our friends and relatives in NY do not recommend the Shuttle.

A taxi stuck in traffic next to a Blue Van is something to behold I can tell you from experience.

I would still go with the taxi.

When you get in a taxi, The driver will take you directly to your destination. You may hit some traffic.

When you get in a SuperShuttle, you might remain in the airport longer while the driver picks up more passengers at your terminal or the other terminals. If you're lucky, you're the last one in. Then the driver will drop off the passengers, in the order that make geographical sense, not the order of getting in the shuttle. If you're lucky, you're the first one out. You may hit some traffic.

The taxi fare might end up being slightly more than the SuperShuttle, depending on your destination and tolls--only slightly more. I would expect a taxi to always be much quicker. Dealing in NYC traffic while dropping off other people at their hotels is not my idea of a great way to start my NYC visit.

That sounds too low for midtown. You should figure about $35 total (fare, toll and tip of about 20%). More if stuck in traffic.

Supershuttle is a complete no no - it drives all over the place and takes forever. Also - they are sometimes no shows on the way back to the airport.

But, for one person wanting to save money, you can take a shuttle bus to Grand Central or Port Authority and a cab to your hotel from there. This will be more like $25 with both.
