King Tut Exhibit-Fort Lauderdale

Has anyone seen the King Tut exhibit at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale? Did you purchase tickets ahead or not really necessary? I hate to ask, but did you think it was worth it? Tickets for my 3 person family would be $101, which may be a bit pricey if it is a small exhibit.... Thanks for your comments.

Jeri: I purchased a couple of tickets for Fri., Jan. 20 at 1 PM. This was a few weeks ago, and morning tickets were sold out then.

I had much the same concerns as you. However, I poked around a bit and it's apparently quite an exhibit. Go to http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...ent&id=3602063 which indicates that the exhibit's run in LA was extended 4 days to accommodate the crowds.

If this is the same exhibit that was in LA, I saw it.

I was disappointed because I was hoping to show a friend the wonderful stuff I saw in Cairo--but very little of it was there. If you've never seen Egyptian antiquities, you will probably enjoy it--especially if you like standing in lines.

However, I think you would have a lot more fun spending the $101 on lunch and a movie you've been longing to see.

I also saw the exhibit in LA and was very disappointed. They WAY oversold tickets so I couldn't get close enough to see anything and I truly was only "wowed" by a few of the pieces. My local Art Institute has a good antiquities collection that I can view w/o crowds and the admission is FREE!! I am not sure if the LACMA museum in LA was to blame or the show itself, but I felt it was not worth it.

Another LA viewer here, we made the trip just to visit the exhibit. If Egyptian antiquities are your passion, than by all means go. Hopefully the set up will be better than it was than in LA, as mentioned above it was extememly crowded and it really did hinder the enjoyment of the experience.

Hopefully some FLL visitors will check in and provide some input. I wouldn't mind seeing it again

We saw the exhibit in Ft. Lauderdale Monday. We enjoyed it and felt that it was well organized. I think it is hard for anyone to tell you if it is "worth it." I would second what other posters have said, if your into Egyptian antiquities then go.

In FLL, the exhibit is shown in approximately 5 to 6 rooms. Tickets are timed. Small groups are let in at intervals. It was crowded, but not overly crowded. I was able to see each item, and occasionally waited for a "closer look". I would definitely buy the audio tour, without it you would miss alot.

Tickets in advance are a much.

On second thought, if you spend wisely you can stretch the $101 to lunch and two or even three movies. How about "Brokeback Mountain," "The Producers," and "Casanova"?

My DH loves all things Egyptian so whenever anything like that comes to FL, we will see it (Bookhall - we have Jan. 20 - 11am !).

So it's worth it to us- we were planning on getting the audio tour but thanks for mentioning it.

Maryann: Hah! So you're one of the ones who skunked me!

Should be interesting. I don't know whether we'll like it or not, but figured it's worth it since we'll be in the neighborhood.

I saw the first exhibit about 25 years ago in Chicago, when they included that mask & all sorts of other things that are not included in the current exhibit. We saw the exhibit in LA back in June. I am glad I went, I & the family enjoyed it, but not as good as the first one. What I didn't enjoy was that the flow was not setup well at all. Inside the rooms it was a mish mash, helter skelter, everybody for themselves. They let too many people in for the small amount of space. People were always pushing in front & it was difficult to see & read. I tried to stand back out of the way but then didn't get to see much. Then I tried to walk around the backs of the exhibits & quite a few others tried that, & you did get to see more, but then didn't get to read some of the information. I just don't think they set it up too well in LA. Field museum in Chicago did an excellent job of setup last time. Hope they, as well as the other venues, do much better than LA. Hopefully they learned from LA what not to do. I thought that the tickets were a little expensive. If you rent the self guide tour it adds more to the cost. I prefered to read the information signs with the exhibit. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to go through the whole thing. My parents, who were in their 80's, went through it in about 1 hr. I just know that when I got at the end of the exhibit I just wanted to get out of there & away from the crowd.

We saw the exhibit in LA this past September and I really enjoyed it! We were on the way to Egypt for October and the exhbit was such a terrific "appetiser". Be sure to take the optional audio tour if offered.
After seeing all of the treasures in the Cairo museum, I must say that I felt the US travelling show to be far more organized and better lit!
Of course, nothing is quite as moving as tromping through the Valley of the Kings but if you can't make the trip then YES see the exhibit...

There is so much "stuff" in the Egyptian Museum, that the Egypt Antiquities Dept they can't display it all. So much in fact, the basement floor is about collapsing. Guess, they have to put some of it on the road.

Even here, the crowds can make it difficult to see some exhibits, especially in the Tut room.

So, if you can't get to Egypt, these road shows are the next best thing and $33/person isn't all that much; if they have visitors scheduled in time slots is may not be that unbearable.

I feel "King Tut" isn't a good name for the exhibit because it includes very little that is from the actual tomb--and none of the mind-blowing pieces. However, the person I took to see the exhibit when it was in LA told me he liked it (I was disappointed). Neither of us liked the long lines and wait to get into the show.

I agree with all the comments about the LA show. Too crowded, not enough pieces, and if you have ever seen any egyptian artifacts, very underwhelming. However, if it is your first exposure to these treasures, it's a great opportunity. I just hope FL is more organized than LACMA and keeps the groups admitted to a reasonable number. In LA we waited in a crowded tent for over an hour and a half before they let a huge group of us in. I was ready to ask for my money back!

It would be hard to top the first tour. I am disappointed this one isn't getting all raves though. It's nowhere near us so it wasn't on the docket, BUT we will see the Dead Sea Scrolls in a month or so.

Just saw Tut this afternoon in Ft. Lauderdale. My family & I found the exhibit to be very interesting. We had a 4 pm entry time on a weekday and didn't have any trouble with crowds. I had no problems navigating the rooms and seeing each item and I was even pushing a sleeping baby in a stroller. The audio tour is well worth it. I have always been fascinated with Egyptian culture and especially Tut. I was not disappointed.

PBS recently aired a Rick Steves episode in Egypt that included a visit to the museum in Cairo, which shows the fabulous stuff from the Tut tomb that was not in LA and will not be in Ft. Lauderdale. I object to the use of "King Tut" in the title of an exhibit that includes so little of his items.
