Hello,

I am in final planning stages for a trip to Yellowstone / Grand Teton this June.

We fly into SLC (I have another post on lodging there) then on to Yellowstone. We have 3 nights each at Old Faithful Inn, Mammoth Cabins and Lake Yellowstone Hotel.

This leaves us 4 nights to explore Grand Teton Nat'l Park and Jackson area.

This is another area that I fell down on my research as I was focused on Yellowstone because you have to reserve so far out.

I have been reading as many posts as I can find and am debating between GTNP lodging, staying in Teton Village or in Jackson Hole downtown. I am leaning away from the GTNP lodging as I think DH will be tv-deprived by then but nothing set in stone at this point.

All help and pointers gratefully accepted.

Ive stayed in Teton Village and enjoyed it, but that was in the days of cheaper gas. It is a bit of a drive into the heart of the park. Also stayed at Signal Mountain Lodge and Jackson Lake Lodge and found them to be a good location in the park and comfortable. Never stayed in Jackson itself.

Check out Signal Mtn Lodge - the cabins don't have tv but some of the other rooms might. It is right on the lake and it is so beautiful. Jackson is a cute town for spending a night but is otherwise overpriced and not in the park.

At Signal Mtn, we were only a few minutes from Oxbow Bend where we spent hours moose watching. Also close to the road up Signal Mtn for a gorgeous view of the Tetons. You are going there to see the parks - staying in them so you can be close to the "action" is so worth it. And the restaurant at Signal Mtn is excellent. Maybe you can spend 2 nights in the park and the other 2 in Jackson for a change of pace.

You are very smart to allow for so much time in YNP - we spent 6 nights (2 each in OFI, Mammoth, and Canyon) and we wished that we'd had more. Enjoy!

Jackson Hole is one of our favorite places and we try to make it out there at least every other summer. We always stay in the park, at either the Jackson Lake Lodge or the Colter Bay cabins. Both are nice with Jackson Lake Lodge being more hotel-like and Colter Bay being a little more rustic (but still nice). We've stayed in Teton Village once (The Alpenhof) but it didn't feel like a Nat'l Park...felt like a ski resort in the off-season. However, it was nice. We've never stayed in the town of Jackson, but usually take the kids in to town for the cowboy shoot-out. Our trip is primarily to see the Tetons and Yellowstone, so the town puts you a little further away from all that. Jenny Lake cabins are gorgeous, but a little more expensive. Our kids like the cabins at Colter Bay or the cabins at Jackson Lake Lodge. I'm pretty sure you can do rafting or horse-back riding activities from either of these places too. The cabins at both places tend to book up quickly, but I just booked a cabin at Colter Bay for my husband and son's fishing trip in mid-August. I don't think the larger 2-bedroom cabins had availability though (www.gtlc.com). Have a great time.

I am having the same dilemma. I'm doing the trip in the reverse, but as of now, I am spending a night in Jackson at the Trapper Inn, which has newly renovated rooms, and then two nights at Jackson Lake Lodge in GTNP. I've also thought about Spring Creek Ranch just outside Jackson. The lodging in Jackson seems very expensive for what you get.

We solved your dilemma by staying 2 nights in the park (I think the Jackson Lake Lodge is great - you can hang out in the gorgeous lobby at night and soak up the ambiance and enjoy people-watching, eating, having a cocktail, if so inclined, etc....and then moving into Jackson for the remainder of the time - have stayed on the square itself - the location was great b/c we could park the car and walk everywhere but the accomodations we chose were just so-so - or stay away from Main Street - drive in and park in one of the city lots (there is one just off the square) and walk. The last time we were there we ended up at the Wyoming Inn - either a Best Western or a Red Lion (I think) but I would stay there again without hesitation. Have a good trip! Be sure to take the boat across Jenny Lake and hike up to Inspiration Point - awesome!

We loved Teton Village, but we were traveling with 2 teenagers and the amount of space was great. It is a 2 minute drive to Park entrance, but admittedly longer into heart of Park. But we enjoyed the drive. Saw a moose eating landscaping at Teton Village but neve saw a moose in the Park.

OK - I have made some progress. Took the idea of splitting some time in Grand Teton National Park (and booked Signal Mountain Lodge)

Now looking for Jackson itself. I found the Wyoming Inn and the Lodge @ Jackson Hole a Best Western. Both say they are "close" to town and would either be shuttle or drive in it seems.

Are there other options right "in town" that I should consider that won't break the bank. The Wort Hotel is unavailable and Rusty Parrot was $500/night which is well above our range.

We are trying to stay around $250/night or so.

Is in town worth it?

i'm booked here for august. looks so much better than the other places and the price is pretty affordable. Very close to the plaza - a block and 1/2 walking distance.

We too like to split our time between JH and Tetons. While we're in JH, we do the snake river white water and we have dinner at a nice place - do the town thing. When we get to GTNP, we stay at Colter Bay cabins (more rustic feel) but this year we'll be also doing an overnight kayaking trip from Signal Mountain with OARS.

Oh, and yes, in town is definitely worth it. Have a drink at the cowboy bar too! It's right on the plaza. We really enjoyed snake river grill when we were there last and can't wait to have dinner there again.
