Is Santa Fe a good choice for a girl's getaway weekend?

We are 3 friends (49, 46 & 30) who live outside of Boston. Looking to plan a getaway weekend. Trying to come up with something different. We like good food, wine, shopping and outdoor activities.

Would Santa Fe be a good choice for us? If so, can we get suggestions for a wondeful hotel. Also, how far is Taos from Santa Fe? Thanks in advance for your help.

Santa Fe is pretty popular for the activites you mention. There are good hotels restaurants in town and interesting hiking at anasazi ruins or old churches on the drive to taos.

Some of hte best hotels woud be inn at the anasazi or la posada.

Santa Fe is a great destination. It's a very small city to be so popular. Inn of the Anasazi is a member of Rosewood Hotels who own Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas and Little Dix Bay, Caneel Bay and Jumby Bay in the Caribbean. It's a fine hotel.

Inn of Five Graces is also a terrific hotel but there was no restaurant my last visit in 06. Of course you can walk anywhere in SF around the Square in minutes. Be sure to take in Canyon
Road which is home to a lot of art galleries.

The owners of Five Graces own The Point and Lake Placid Lodge in Upstate NY.

Be sure to check out the great spa which is outside town several miles called 10,000 waves. It's one of the top in the U. S. Eat at Coyote Cafe, Geronimo, Inn of the Anasazi and Cafe Pasqual's.

Taos is about 2 hours I think. There are two routes to take there, the low road and the high road. Be sure to go one way and come back the other. Go to Los Alamos and view the museum there. Have a nice trip.

Hi Ike, the Inn of the Five Graces has a 2 bedroom suite which would work well for us. Did you really like it there? Also, I know it is not right on the plaza but is it a close walk to it?

Was in Santa Fe just last week--ate at La Boca--lovely tapas (get the bruschetta for sure) http://www.santafe.com/sfrestaurants/110/ and Trattoria Nostrani http://www.trattorianostrani.com/ Had one of the finest meals I've ever had. They have an amazing wine list also.

I wasn't gonna respond because I'm the wrong gender, but, looks like I'm not the only one! ;-)

Two minute walk from Five Graces to the Plaza. Stay there if you can; best location in town.

If you substitute margaritas for wine - when in Rome - I think Santa Fe covers all your bases. Taos is about 1.5 hours via the low road, quite a bit longer via the high road. I'd bet you'd all enjoy a visit to Sanctuario de Chimayo along the high road, and Taos Pueblo. Hiking in Bandelier would be good too.

Santa Cafe is another nice spot for dinner. But you really can't miss. That is, unless you don't get to Ore House and sit on the deck overlooking the Plaza sipping margaritas and munching on tortilla chips dipped in their charred tomato salsa. It doesn't get any better.

Post back if you decide on Santa Fe. I'd like you to pick me up this sculpture I had my eye on in a gallery on Canyon Rd.

It's about 5 minutes across the river to the Plaza. Here's a live cam link to the Plaza.

Be sure to check out the SF Flea Market. It used to be out north of town but it's moved to the Rodeo location. The rodeo was nice too.

Have fun.

Beach Bum is right on. Santa Cafe is outstanding. Sit outside in the courtyard. There's a lot of sightseeing to do in town, Canyon Rd., lots of art, Los Alamos, Taos, museums, lots of history. Watch what you eat. They like peppers out there. Have fun.

Here's someone's description of their "high road" trip including a discussion of Sanctuario de Chimayo.

Here's a fine spot if you had time. It's 38 miles N. of SF.

Santa Fe would be a great choice. You can get all kinds of great food (not just New Mexican), good wine, and all the other things you want.

It took us about two hours to take the high road to Taos in February, but we took a wrong turn along the way. It's a great drive, though, through a variety of villages.

I definitely recommend Santa Fe! So much for you to do. Great spa -- Ten Thousand Waves. Set in a quiet mountain setting with outdoor tubs facing the mountain -- the most tranquil setting and decor.

You'll love Five Graces. Beachbum is right -- perfect location and yes, try his favorite spot -- Ore House on the patio with a 'rita and that charred tomato salsa that you can take home with you.

( hey beachbum, had some in your honor yesterday! Simply fabulous with a Silver Coin margarita. DH wanted to take a picture of it to post but I didn't want to rub it in http://homes.realtor.com/prop/1070495585 )

You have great ideas and good info above. I posted recently for someone on restaurants so you can do a search on my name and find it. Lots of great places here in Santa Fe.

We love Santa Fe and get out there 4-6 times a year so if you need some food info just ask. We're all about the next meal!!

I'll post a small report when I get back next week as there are a couple of new ones that were fantastic!

I like Taos a lot better..
I have been several times to Santa Fe and as much as I want to like it, I come out of there just hating it.
It's just so...fake to me.
IMO
Have you considered Sedona?

Guess you all beat me to it! Santa Fe would be a great girls weekend. I would pick it over Taos, which is has a lot less activities to do on a weekend.

Remember, you will need to fly in to Albuquerque as it is the closest airport and you will need a car.

In case the weather isn't good for outdoor activites, and even if it is, don't miss Museum Hill
http://www.museumhill.org/

If this is your first time to Nm/Southwest, be sure to take time to do things unique to SW [ ruins etc].

A great hike that is unlike anything you've ever seen in Boston is Tent Rocks -

http://www.nm.blm.gov/recreation/alb...sha_katuwe.htm

Or head north of town to Tesuque Market for a great breakfast or lunch and then go to Shidoni Brass Foundry for some beautiful items.

You can drive up to Taos and back to Santa Fe in 1 [long] day. In Taos, you can fly in a hot air balloon, go rafting.

Just south of Santa Fe, in cerrillos, is the Broken Saddle Ranch if you feel like going for a horse back ride.

Let me know if you'd like more suggestions.

Meant to ask what time of year you are planning on going? Might make a difference in activities.

Ten Thousand Waves is a wonderful spa experience - they have rooms there. But honestly, if you are only coming for a weekend and you've never been to NM/SW before, I'd pass on it this time and make it something for next trip. And there will be a next trip, cause once is never enough! Just ask Sheila

Santa Fe is a good destination - period! ...but it IS perfect for what you are looking forward. All the suggestions have been great but I would also add a stroll down Canyon Road if you ladies like art at all (it's an artist's paradise there) and have lunch at Cafe Des Artists. Also, what's a girl's weekend out without some spa action? The mineral pools and hot baths at Ojo Caliente northwest from Santa Fe is really great!

Hi everyone, thank you so much for all of your help and for your sense of humors. We have decided to do our Girl's Getaway in Santa Fe. We will be staying at the Inn of Five Graces.

We are so excited - can't wait. Have a great weekend everyone!!

Artman:
For most, it's a lot of shopping.
Add a little spa, maybe a chick-flick, a little wine, some fine dining that you don't have to cook and clean up... Basically, there you have it!
