How is the walk from Penn Station to Doubletree Times Square

How is the walk from Penn Station to Doubletree Times Square
We are a family of 6 who are going to be taking the train from DC to NY the last week of June. I have decided to stay at the Doubltree NY, but was wondering if anyone can tell me how long of a walk it would be from Penn Station to the hotel. We have three 9 year olds and a 14 year old who will each probably have a rolling suitcase and a backpack (this is week 2 of a 5 week East Coast vacation). Also, I was hoping to be very close to a subway station for sightseeing purposes, any thoughts? My kids are pretty wussy and we will be doing a lot of walking anyway, so hopefully from subway to hotel is not that far....

The Doubletree is in the heart of Times Square. There are subways everywhere. It is about 9 blocks from Penn Station on crowded sidewalks, but doable. I wouldn't take the subway there because it will take more time navigating the subways then it will to just walk.

Not sure exactly what street the Doubletree is on, but Penn Station and Times Square are about a 10 minute walk from each other, tops, and the walk should be no problem.
Penn Station is on W.32nd St. and 8th Av., and Times Sq. is on W.42-W. 44th St and B'way. All but one are very short blocks.
No matter where you are in NY, you will be close to a subway station. Times Sq. is a hub and most of the subway lines are accessible from there.

Note that streets will be crowded and you will need to walk single file - 3 or 4 abreast simply can;t be done. Also there will be alot of subway gratig - so make sure wheel on luggage are study and won;t get caught.
The 9 year olds may get kind of lost in the crowds. If it were me I would grab 2 cabs when you have luggage.

My kids still remind me of how long a walk it is when you are also carrying luggage. And it was 10 years ago. I highly recommend spending the bucks for 2 cabs. Or send 1 adult and a kid or 2 and the luggage in a cab and the rest of you walk, if paying for 2 cabs is out of the question.

The responses above were based on the Doubletree Guest Suites at Times Square (1568 Broadway, and a good choice for a family with their suite rooms) but there are two other Doubletrees in Manhattan.
